I built the whole thing except for gluing the sections together and mounting the wing. I then rubber-banded some CF rods to the fuselage, crossways, and used them for movable wing tie-downs. I located the wing at the proper CG location (with all electronics and battery in) and made the holes in the fuselage where the rubber bands exit. I disjointed the sections and glued the lengthwise CF wing tiedowns so the tips met the holes. I then glued the sections together and mounted the wing.

Yes, that sounds totally plausible about the wire. That's a pretty long stretch, except maybe for an up-pulling elevator rod. Good call on the guide. Nice find on the arrow! Should I have been so lucky! At least they're down to about $4 now.

I have made my photon, but after flying to about 20 meters high in 7 mph wind I put it up on a wing tip. The next thing I knew I was trying to pull out of a head first dive. The entire nose section of fuse crumpled and my lipo seemed to take the brunt of it. My motor still works so I will try to fly again this weekend after buying another battery. I will also pay more attention to balancing the plane and favoring nose heavy as opposed to tail heavy.

It's all good as long as the upper fuselage is bridged with gift cards or additional foamboard. See the flight video for inflight fuselage breakage. It's just one way of doing it, with caveats as with any method.

I'm surprised to see that you actually glued the carbon rods into the fuselage for the wing tie down. Instead, I looped the rubber bands through themselves on one end, so the would stay attached to the carbon rod. Then I used the rubber band that goes under the wing to ensure the rods stay aligned and held to the top of the fuselage. It was a pain to get them into place at first, but using a hemostats (thin locking medical pliers) made it easier to pull them into place.

How did you decide wing location? For you, probably experience. For the rest of us wanting to do a fuselage longer than 30", how should I decide where to put the wing? If the two sections are joined first, then there is no way to insert the wing tie-downs lengthwise. Thanks for all your great videos!

Hi Have followed your designs and have built your "photon" and had a great deal of enjoyment from it. For that many thanks. Just a little background I live in New Zealand am 73 years young and a very active club flyer and fanactical builder. Just so many projects so little time. This aside I have been very interested in converting to Gas power and have a Ryobi 26cc weed eater motor all set up for rc aircraft. I just love flying large slow graceful aircraft and the change to gas is my next logical step. I want to build an "Armin WIng" design craft around the 80" span and any shape fusalarge you feel would carry the power unit involved. I think hand launch might be impractable. A large version of the "Donkey" design really appeals. Your honest thoughts would be much appreciated. Thanks Colin

Great channel, perfectly explained instruction, I have watched almost all, how to tape the depron, wing build, fuselage build etc. I really like to build the Photon. I have question: Can you please specify (as I did not catch this information) how long are the two parts of fuselage in cm, and how long (in cm) are the wings please, that would really helped me :-) good luck and keep up the good work ;-)

Ed, Now After two crashes I am wondering if my control bars are too lightweight and bending. 18 ga wire bent to fit, but with the elevator and rudder the length is perhaps too long at ~10" for this wire. I will try a guide to keep from flexing. BTW I stopped by an archery range and found 5 discarded broken arrows in the trash. Although they would be too dangerous as arrows I believe they will be very light and cheap spars for my next wing.

Any motor will work if it will give 500g of thrust or more. You could maybe get by without a rudder but it will fly better with one. I would include a rudder and at least mix it to your aileron channel, which is commonly done.

Ed, I just found your channel last week and I love it! I just stated building my photon and have my armin wing and tubes done. I do have a question about joining the two tubes... would there be any benefit/detriment to having the 15" tube toward the elevator/rudder of the plane?

You must have made 100's of Armin wings by now... you should do a video showing your fleet.

I would have preferred not to glue them, but they migrate centrally, unless you placed a precise block on the inner, upper fuselage. I just glued it for simplicity.

Oh I dunno. The dull blades work as a squeegee for pressing down tape tabs, etc. If so inclined.

I prefer to use square dowels or square carbon fiber through the sides of the air frame for wing attachment. Cutting out the corners in those four locations creates weak points. The strength of the frame is it's corners. The square dowels give you flat edges to glue in place and therefore eliminating tearing out or hole enlargement as the round dowels can. Also the corners are kept in tact keeping the air frame strong. It is worth the trade off for what little you would lose in aerodynamics.

What's stopping you? All you need is some foamboard, tape, and glue, and a little imagination. (I got that from rc foamfighters).

Well, if the instruction is to ALWAYS use a fresh blade, the time to use a dull blade would be NEVER.
