If you ever burn up a selenium rectifier, they smell like rotten eggs. So, don't fart when conducting your test! You won't be able to tell if a rectifier is failing or you just sharted.
@TS-jm7jm4 жыл бұрын
@Irish Viking how did you manage that?
@someguy49154 жыл бұрын
@@TS-jm7jm Well it's a natural thing, gasses build up and eventually you release them in a fart.
@akkudakkupl3 жыл бұрын
Actualy selenoorganics smell WAY WORSE than their sulfur containing analogues.
@whatevernamegoeshere36443 жыл бұрын
Fun fact, molecules with H-S bonds smell like farts or rotten eggs usually. Stuff with H-Se bonds smell the same but 100x stronger. Your threshold for it is already in the parts per trillion but it's 100x that now. And tellurium with H-Te bonds are even worse. At that point you are sensing a handful of molecules as a rotten egg smell. When universities do anything with the latter 2 groups of compounds they usually send out emails to warn people of the smell on the entire campus because if they don't, dozens will report gas leaks

I got here, researching the huge selenium rectifier in a vintage 60 AMP battery charger I am trying to fix. Then I am reminded of the old carbon arc lamps we used to burn printing plates, at the print shop many years ago. Great memories, Thank You!

Reminds of this one time when I was much younger with the biggest love of my life, we stumbled on this old worn out electrical box that was made by Rube Goldberg himself. It had like 25 knobs and 30 switches and it was like a cattle gate or something stupid like that (cracking up typing this btw).. I was a cattle gate or something and I started messing with the contraption and made robot sounds and stuff and she loved it. Up with 10 movements of 12 different knobs in coordination with pushing timed switches relayed to limit switches.. Somehow I didn't short it out or release any cows. It was awesome. This thing reminds me of how strange history is.

Ahh! The lovely T & Rs'. They were great, - though I did have one expire on me near the end of reel 5 of Get Carter (a nice 35mm print) with Mike Hodges (Director) in the audience. I had a Westalite (Westinghouse Brake & Signal) as backup. It happened so near the end of the reel that I had to make an early changeover. When selenium rectifiers fail, there's a distinct acrid smell. Many would attest that mercury arcs were more reliable. I was burning Marble Double Eagle 7mm neg/ 8mm pos carbons at 70 amps.

The transformers in welders (at least heavy-duty welders), are meant to handle the output being shorted for long periods of time. The same is true for the ignition transformers used in furnaces, and neon-sign transformers. Basically, there are a *lot* of applications for internally-current-limited transformers. Saying transformers "aren't ever" meant to survive such situations is incorrect.

Just as long as ur safe and know what ur doing its quite easy to play with electricity and be safe The main rule of thumb for avoiding shock is that you dont want 2 different parts of your body at different voltages - follow that and ur good to go!
