MEALWORMS VS WHOLE WATERMELON

Photo Owl Time Lapse

Photo Owl Time Lapse

Күн бұрын

We already have seen mealworms eating various things, like apples, oranges, cucumber, but I was curious if they could handle a whole watermelon. This wasn't an easy task, because you can't just fill up a bathtub with mealworms and drop a watermelon in it. That way the ones on the bottom would suffocate, and basically, only your top 1 inch (or so) layer would be live mealworms, the rest would be just laying on the bottom. So if I can make only a maximum 1-inch thick layer of mealworms can they possibly finish a whole watermelon, - I was wondering. Just like as with the McDonald's cup experiment, no one has ever tried to feed a whole watermelon to mealworms, so in order to find out the results, I needed to do it myself. I must say I wasn't too surprised.
Next to the mealworms vs whole watermelon time-lapse, I also added some other clips you asked for in the comments, such as mealworms eating lemon, octopus, salmon, and coconut. You didn't ask for it, but since these worms enjoy live greenery, I fed them a pea plant too.
I'm glad I can also show you the hatching process of these small creatures in macro. That part was very interesting to me.
Another small update-slash-news, I'm forced to use watermarks on my time lapses from now on. I didn't want to, because in my opinion, it takes away from the experience, but I also have to protect my time lapses from people who take it without permission and act like it was theirs.
I considered the framing of every clip, so the watermark is not obstructive, I hope you will still enjoy my videos.

Interestingly, when the melon started to smell, the mealworms most of the mealworms tried to keep their distance from it. Who would have thought even they can be "disgusted" by rotten fruits.

Mealworms and other maggots and such are generally solitary. They don’t really communicate with one another like how eusocial insects do. This makes me want those meal worms! Every single video of yours that I've watched In the past few days since I first stumbled over you has been addictively intriguing and the chill music you pair with it makes the viewing experience almost calmingly therapeutic. Seeing everything get dissolved over timelapse feels SO satisfying! I noticed with the personal watermelon that some of the worms started to die. I don't recall ever seeing this in other videos. Is it normal? Then I saw that it was bad fruit and you said you gave them a fresh slice so they wouldn't be harmed. Were they dying because of the bad watermelon? I also found it funny that they didn't eat much of the lemon. I'm guessing because it was too acidic.

@Cabbageface Жыл бұрын
Mealworms are crazy resiliant so I can't imagine that it would have effected them, the dying you're reffering to is possibly them being stuffed, shedding or close to pupating. I have a farm and they tend to look lathargic when they're close to changing into the pupas. I remember years ago seeing an accidental mealworm farm, where honestly they werent being cared for as they were food for a lizard, but they were constantly reproducing, just goes to show how easy they are to farm. Looking back at the watermelon part, you can actually see them turning into pupas (those white things with the spikey sides)

They can live off Styrofoam and other garbage. Pretty hardy creatures. They just prefer the fresher stuff, but they can eat moldy stuff, much easier than humans. They will be happier with fresh.

I keep and breed superworms, which are the bigger cousins of these mealworms. They will try to nibble the hair off of your hand, but they won't skeletonize your hand. They're absolutely harmless and though they have jaws that look intimidating, they won't bite even if picked up.
