On timestamp 6:45 you say CTRL-V to paste in layer mask. When I do this it creates and pastes it in new layer.

I resolved it. You should have said ALT-click instead of SHIFT-click to be able to paste in mask.

Shift-clicking the hidden layer mask make it visible by default.

This is not working for me. As at 6:48, I try to paste the copied image into the layer mask, but every time it instead creates a new layer. Is this due to a Photoshop update since this video was made, or am I doing something wrong?

Make sure the layer mask is active before you paste the image onto it.

You skipped a step. Right after you made the layer a smart object, you say go into the filter gallery and right after that the picture turns into a stencil

Actually, no step was skipped. As soon as you click OK in the filter gallery, the face is automatically updated as a stencil.
