Normally, yes, but in this particular case, the threads don't conform to the shadows and highlights of the tuft - they lay flat.

Click the "fx" icon at the bottom of the Layers Panel and click "Inner Glow". When the Inner Glow panel shows in the Layer Styles window opens, make the color black. The blend mode could be Multiply or Linear Burn. Set the opacity, to your liking. The "source is "Edge", the Choke" is 0% and the Size to your liking.

If you make the text or graphic into a Smart Object form the start, PS can automatically replace it with a different design up to the point just before you add stitches.

Thanks for another great tutorial Marty! But as in the video on 7.01 in my project 'Stroke path' is greyed out... I'm using 2020. Is it not possible in the 2020 version maybe?

In the Paths panel, click the "work Path" to make it active and then, you should see "Stroke Path".

Reduce the "Fill" to 0%. "Fill" is under "Opacity" at the top of the Layers panel.
