by using guides. You can easily select background layer scroll mouse on ruler press and move it then you get a guide line. To center it slowly drag it across the canvas until it locks. Which will mean its in the center.

Great video (again), Marty. I have a couple of additions I’d like to share. You should add the Drop Shadow and the bottom Gradient to the Layer Style of the type layer so that you can simply open the Smart Object and change the word to whatever you want. Otherwise, you will need to change both these layers to suit the new type. For the Lens Flare layer, once you make the stamp layer, make a new layer and fill with black then press cmd/cntrl+F to repeat the lens flare and change the blend mode of the layer to Screen. Then delete the stamped layer. This way your non-destructive layers are all live and adjustable. If you make this a Smart Object, you can even adjust the flare after the fact.

fyi, an easy way to clip to layer in older ps versions is to position the cursor in layers on the line between the two you want to clip and option-click (in mac).

All of my tutorials up to a few months ago, show people this technique, but because too many were having problems positioning their cursors between the layers, I decided to stop using that technique & show the keystrokes instead.
