I created it in Illustrator but rather than use a fill it just requires a gradient to act as the shadow.

How do you merge all those shapes together so you can move him about, every time I click merge shapes it all goes one colour

select all the layers, either by clicking the bottom one and holding shift then selecting the top one or hold command/ctrl as you select which shapes you want then press cmd/ctrl+t to bring up the transform tool and you should be able to move them around. Hope this helps you.
