I'm a newbie artist and I use Sketchbook! It definitely takes some practice and there was a learning curve, but I love it so far! I've tried Procreate on my friend's iPad a few times, but I'm not sure if I'm as crazy about it. Again, it's most definitely a learning curve so I would probably just need to spend more time on it. Sketchbook has been a great tool as someone who is just getting into digital art and also for someone who's a grad student and needs to save their money 🙃

i've used photoshop for about 7 years and i love it but i've shifted towards Clip Studio because it feels more natural when drawing to me but the best part is being able to open your file in either clip studio or photoshop. There is lots of short keys but once u dig in it you'll love it. The new update also will manage animations. New window for color and new customization for brushes. I also make some GIF animations and don't forget you can add text. The only issue is that depending of the quality and size or ur canvas it's limit the number of layers .And you can wrap, distortion and some other effects, the options for effect layers is limited compare to others but have the basic important ones the warp effect in procreateis good but is not has good has Photoshop. And I noticed when u resize lines or copy and past it tends to pixelate and loose lightly some quality. But overall is awesome I been using it for 4 years and getting better and faster.

Procreate is my favorite for general sketching and painting just for the brush engine and for not being tethered to my pc while using it. When I have to do something more intensive I still fall back on photoshop for its photo editing tools, but for comics, which is something I want to get into, I don’t think anything is in quite the same league as clip studio paint at the moment. In addition to the kind of brush stabilization and perspective tools other art focused programs have it has a lot of tools that no others have, like built in posable 3D figures, a bunch of tools for quickly laying out panels or setting up different kinds of speech balloons, the ability to set your strokes as vectors and edit them after making them, and some really unique options for the ways you can use reference layers when coloring. It would be perfect if I could use csp on my iPad, but unfortunately from what I’ve heard the mobile version isn’t optimized particularly well, and it has some issues with file handling.
@cucumberworks
@cucumberworks 4 жыл бұрын
Actually the mobile version of CSP is quite optimized in my opinion. Many people don't like the UI of the mobile version(it's exactly the same as the desktop version). I personally don't find that to be an issue at all, especially if you are working on the 13 inch iPad. I'm really glad that they choose to take the full package of CSP to the iPad, unlike the crippled version of photoshop. You can even import all the brushes and 3D models into CSP mobile, and all the perspective, filter and ruler functions are in there. The only thing that I think is missing is the higher refresh rate. I think CSP runs less smooth than Procreate but it is really barely noticeable. It does charge a monthly fee but you can use the 1 month trial period to give it a try.
@sociallyresponsiblexenomor7608
@sociallyresponsiblexenomor7608 4 жыл бұрын
@@cucumberworks Yeah the monthly fee is the killer for me; it's like just sell access to the damn software. If you "Have to charge for updates" (Despite procreate doing fine and not doing that) then offer like, a license for the current version at a flat fee, and then a "Free updates for life" payment option that costs more, and one that lets you pay less but just pay to update it to the current version. The game organiation tool "Launchbox" did that method and they did Phenomenally well with sales and were able to almost triple the price of their product because it grew so much so quickly and was making so much money lol.

You should absolutely give Krita a try. Just 15 Minutes or so, try the brushes. It blends super nice, got realistic brushes, pixel brushes, filters etc. There's for example (L) for lighten and (K) for darken when you paint (which let's you go up or down by 10% of value). It does most things, and painting really well. Procreate 5 is awesome so far, I tried the beta a little bit. I'd say my PS brushes imported like 80%. Can't be much closer if you ask me. Also, Affinity Photo has gone a long way, is still not perfectly there but I think in a year or two Photoshop can be skipped for me, been using it for 15 years and I really don't like 120 bucks a year when I can pay 50 or even 0 and OWN the software. Anyway, thanks for the video. And nice drawings in the new Diablo Artbook! Mine arrived yesterday. :-)

Have you played with the Adobe Sketch app for mobile devices (maybe just iOS, I'm not sure)? Somehow, there's a watercolor rendering engine in that app that is the only reason I use it, because it's pretty mind-blowing and different from any other watercolor emulation efforts I've been able to find. It basically allows you to revel in the bleeding effects that is the bane of anyone who's tried watercolor, but offers a unique and lovely quality to anyone who embraces the zen of it. I hate going to a mobile app to accomplish something that I can't find for desktop, though. It seems backward, and must be a temporary failing, but if you know of a good alternative, I'd love to know of it.

I’ve been using infinite painter on iPad as of late and found it to have many great features above procreate. But then I’m torn cause procreate is so great too😭😭

I love procreate. I have an iPad Pro and use the Apple Pencil....but I am doing pictures for a children’s book and I hate how my outlines are pixelated and blurry! I am always zooming in and out. So can I import my art in studio and redo my outline? Or what else can I do to fix the blurry look? I am not the most technologically minded person, but I flow with procreate....I got the free app Vectornator and thought that would be the solution, but my lines don’t stay crisp...my lines move a bit? I just didn’t like the app! I don’t mind paying a little bit, but don’t want to pay subscriptions...and I need something user friendly...art should be fun anyways...if you can help...I’d appreciate it! I keep looking at other apps, but I just gets confusing with so many to choose from! thank You!

krita. probably mentioned before, but yeah. Best brush engine by far (with the exception of watercolor styling from corel). Check out Ramon Miranda's portfolio.

My main complaint with Sketchbook and Procreate and Krita and Sai it's that I like to print my stuff and those only allow a fairly small canvas.

The industrial design field relies heavily on sketchbook pro. We typically touch photoshop if we want to REALLY tighten a final render drawing. Great video!

I Prefer The 12.9 IPad Pro with the Apple Pencil 2. This thing is always ready to draw on, an the Pencil Hardly ever gets low on battery. Even if it does then it just takes a few mins to really charge enough to draw with. The Way the Pencil Charges is a lot better than the Way the First Pencil Charges. Trent You Never Disappoint My Man..!! Solid Video as always..!! 👊😎 Wld like to see some more of those “Trents Tool Box 📦 “ Video’s..!!

Besides the initial cost procreate has no additional fees, they are also very active in their instagram and connect a lot with the community, I am very happy with this app and always find myself back to it, so far I have translate a lot of things I learn to Procreate even if most tutorials I learn are in photoshop, but I hope they do gradient maps on it soon and vector functionality which I will keep requesting on their Q&A fridays and forums 😅 also I would love to see you use procreate and make tutorials with it,since that’s my primary drawing app.

I have to wonder, though, how long can Procreate go with just that one-time low price? Seems like that can't last forever.

I do not work with illustration but I've been having it as a hobby for a long time. Recently I switched to Linux and, of course, needed to find some alternative to Photoshop. It turns out that I find Krita, free, completely open source and it has some Photoshop feel. I don't know, usually I have some troubles sketching in other softwares, it just doesn't feel that natural, but with Krita things are going really well

I'm very happy you said you're learning Blender :D Trent, since I know you do characters as well as environments, you should totally attempt some sculpting, because although it's not as optimized as Zbrush for some of the higher polys you can get from sculpting, you could still get some cool sculpts and pretty nice character concepts. Just a thought!
