I think I've watched you do many if not most all of these selection edge improvement techniques here and there before, but thank you for consolidating and sharing them into one "bucket".

For reducing fuzzy edges you can also use the two filters Noise > Median or Noise > Dust & Scratches. It makes the edges smoother.

Great tutorial and techniques for refining edges. If anyone is interested I thought I would share a workflow for refining the edges on both the body and hair using only ONE mask. It’s essentially a two stage process: 1. Select your subject. Then go into select and mask and focus on refining the edges of the body only by using the global refinement sliders. I like to do this by adding a slight feather (and sometimes smooth as well) to blur the edges. Then bring back the sharpness of the edge with the contrast slider. And finally shift the edge inwards a little to avoid and fringing. Output the refinements to a layer mask. 2. With that layer selected go back into select and mask a second time. You will notice all the global refinement sliders we used on the body have been reset. Now you can focus on refining the edges of the hair alone using the refine edge brush. Output to a layer mask to update the mask with the hair refinement. Now you have both body and hair refinements on the same mask.

I'm not really new to Photoshop but I primally use Lightroom. I am an amateur photographer and use Lightroom for that. But lately I have been wanting to learn how to really use Photoshop. I have a couple of old prints that I bought from a street vender in Paris several years ago and am playing around with the scans I made. Thanks for the tips.

Thanks. Great presentation - However im still looking for the best method for making an accurate selection of complex imagesuch as the Wattle Blossom flower branch where there are hundreds of fine protrusions all over the image and lots of little open spaces to be separated, any advice would be forever appreciated
