Only thing I would add is to make the shadow a smart object first, then apply a bit more Gaussian blur. Then in the layer mask use the gradient to make the blur reduce as it gets closer to the subjects feet so it's gradually more blurry as the shadow falls away. 😉

Thanks for the tutorial, but I would like to see shadow that is useful for composting. Multiple shadows interacting with each other from various objects, displacement of shadows as it goes over various objects, and going from floor to the wall etc. We need more advance realistic usage.

I believe the blur has to be gradual also, sharper near the person, blurrier as it goes away from it. May be tiltshift blur is a better option to use

Try blur galeri instead of gaussian blur. Use tilt shift option and it will result more realistic transition from sharp in contact to the shoes to little bit blurry shadow in the below shadow area which means more far from the ground 😀

Interesting - thanks! I can imagine applying this to an image of 2 or 3 randomly placed flowers laying on a surface or some flower petals to get an interesting pattern. Perhaps an image of several tightly cropped, randomly placed, face-only shots of someone or of all members of a family would also make an interesting pattern. There should be no reason why all layers have to be a pattern of the same original image - my two previous ideas may be better with each flower or each face on it's own layer until the pattern is filled - seems like a fun technique limited only by imagination.

Thank you very much indeed! I enjoyed this tutorial a lot. I have of course a wish to see continuation on how to create a shadow of someone who jumps, a shadow of someone who is falling into water to see the shadow on the water, and to create a shadow on steps, it is so much distorted and looks funny! So one thing is to catch such a shadow, which I am fond of, and another thing is to create a realistic shadow in Ps. Thanks a lot!

I had never thought of using the puppet warp tool to match the shape of the shadow. That's really cool! The editing program I use doesn't have a puppet warp tool, but I think I could achieve a similar effect with a big enough Liquify brush. I think that this example's shadow could benefit from being a little softer at the bottom than the top, perhaps using a tilt-shift blur, but I could be wrong. The result looks very good nonetheless. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for this... One question/comment: It seems aligning the shadow to match perspective is only useful when the light source is obscured by the subject (directly behind and in line with the perspective grid) What do you suggest for accuracy when the source is at an angle that doesn't fall within the perspective plane with respect to the subject?

If you make the shadow a smart object and blur that, you can mask/ fade the blur. Or even better is using the field blur. Just tried both and the field blur is way better.

Very nice tutorial. I would only change one thing: adding a bit of directional horizontal blur to the shadow. In this context I think it would make sense, since the shadows in the original image have also that kind of ''movement'' to them.
