Amazing technique! That really shows how to understand an image and its components. Maybe the thinking behind the fix is the most valuable thing in here, you should do that more often! Usually tutorials don't show off the train of thought behind the solution and, thus, takes a little bit of the overall context out of picture. The way you did it was perfect! Thanks a lot for sharing.

You are the first person I have seen do or say anything about the Lab color space since I took several classes with Dam Margulis at some Photoshop Worlds. It's a powerful color space but one hard to understand and use with ease. Mr. Margulis said it was like the difference between driving a regular Ford car and a Ford ready for a NASCAR track.

Wonderful technique and think it wil be useful for some photos I'm restoring. Would you please offer more videos on restoring old photos? These sometimes need different techniques like this, where your photo is a scan of a print with messed up channels, or stains, fading of colors or blotches of uneven fading. Also are their other ways to remove paper textures? FFT filter doesn't always work. Thank you.

Excellent video, a lot to take in but you have shown me techniques that no one else has shown before (at least that I have seen). It has given me some clues on how to solve some specific problems I have been having repairing scans of old black & white images. I am not sure how to email you an image as a sample but the problem I have is twofold. Firstly, in some of my images that I have scanned they have areas of light leaks or double exposure, you can still see the detail bit overlaying the detail is an aree of much higher brightness, sometimes with a hard sharp edge. The burn tool does not do a very good job at removing only the high exposure and making it blend seemlessly white still retaining the underlying detail. The second issue is sort of related. Some of my image scans have milky stains in various parts of the image. I am searching for a way to wipe cleanly away these milky patches. sometimes these patches or stains are dark, like big fingerprint patterns. The spot healing brush does not really work well as often just smears out the area and loses the underlying detail. Would love to see more videos like this on on repairing problematic monochrome images over and above the usual stuff on Photo restoration. Seen a lot of that stuffon you tube and most of it covers the same stuff.

Amazing tutorial. I have a question to ask you sir: do you also agree that levels is completely useless in photoshop as the curves can do all what levels can and curves can do even far more than levels (of course in 8-Bit)
@anuragsinha2636
@anuragsinha2636 3 жыл бұрын
It's easier... curves can even do the work of color balance still its there.. prefferd options are used. Curves is the master.. but its quite tricky for some
@PhotoshopTrainingChannel
@PhotoshopTrainingChannel 3 жыл бұрын
Not at all. The Levels adjustment is not useless. Just because a tool can do everything else another tool can, it doesn't make it useless. For Example, the Camera Raw filter is more powerful and can do the same thing (and more) than many adjustments layers. Does that make adjustment layers useless? Of course, not. Also, Curves can technically do the same job as a few other adjustment layers like the Invert adjustment, Color Balance, and more. But it doesn't make those adjustment layers useless. While the Curves adjustment is extremely powerful, the important thing to keep in mind is that those adjustments do what they do in different ways. And in some cases, one might be better/easier/faster than the other for your desired outcome. I would learn both and use either when appropriate. For example, I think it's easier/faster to adjust the black and white output levels using Levels. Even adjusting the gamma in some cases might be easier/faster in Levels.

Thanks a lot! But what if you completely copy the Lightness channel into channels a and b, and then somehow modify them? After all, the brightness channel is visually the cleanest ))
@PhotoshopTrainingChannel
@PhotoshopTrainingChannel 3 жыл бұрын
That will not work as smoothly as you think. In some cases, you might have to invert the channel, and still do dodging and burning. In this example, doing that in the "a" channel wouldn't have worked without first doing a lot of work to get it to match. it was easier/faster to dodge and burn.

I had hoped to learn how to improve the scans of my old slides and negatives beyond what I picked up from KZbin a few years ago. I’m not that interested in fixing problems, here I would just accept that it’s a difficult scan. Would it be possible to take us through old color slides with even color cast and show how to get optimum results in terms of (individual) color restoration, noise and sharpness?
