I am afraid bring around is missing in the lesson. I wonder why it means to make someone conscious when he or she passed out. One more question, in the sentence that going to Disneyland brings out the child in everyone, why is the (definite article) needed right before child? Would it sound unnatural to native speakers without the?
@mapleleafesl6162
@mapleleafesl6162 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Hiroteru Yoshihara, yes sometimes I can't fit eveyrthing on the white board so I have to cut a few. To bring someone around does indeed mean to bring them into consciousness. I suppose the literal meaning would be that you are guiding them back to consciousness by bringing the round. As for your second question, that sentence would indeed sound unnatural to a native speaker without the word 'the'. Here the article is included as it is meant to represent that person--that child--that lives inside of me; therefore, the definitive article is necessary as it is specific.
@hiroteruyoshihara1370

Maple Leaf ESL Thank you for your answers. My native language, Japanese, has no phrasal verbs or the definite/indefinite articles in terms of grammar. I find them formidable. English is going to be foreign to me for the rest of my life no matter how hard work on it.

@mapleleafesl6162
@mapleleafesl6162 8 жыл бұрын
The phrasal verb 'bring off' means to accomplish something successfully, often in a difficult situation. For instance, "The director was working under difficult circumstances but brought it off quite nicely". In my experience, this is not a commonly used expression which is why I didn't include it in the lesson. Oftentimes there are too many phrasal verbs for certain verbs and so I can't include all of them.
