Phuket Monopoly is a trashy money spinner

They’ve launched a Phuket version of Monopoly. But it’s not quite the great international marketing opportunity of the Thai island’s unique and iconic attractions. Instead it’s actually a trashy money grab from the makers of the game, HasBro. We get it, but The Thaiger is a bit disappointed... we were sucked in. (Regarding masks, we made sure we were more than 2 metres from anyone whilst filming this segment)

We get a (mostly) free product though to be fair (and advertising is how most online businesses make money in the first place). Traditional Monopoly (e.g. the London edition) doesn't have any ads in it, not even iconic (but commercial) landmarks such as Harrods or The London Eye.

Fair enough and I agree thats safe enough, but it's a perception issue. Enjoyed the feature on Phuket Monopoly. 2 squares missing, pcr on arrival just before go to jail and road block.

Tim we saw on KZbin during 2020 how decimated the City of Phuket was thousands of closed business everything Starbuck, McDonalds, 7/11 , hotels, Bars and restaurants mile after miles street after street now I hear that they have just 3 percent of pre covid tourist have returned. If Phuket is missing 97 percent of its Customers what is open besides the Bars on Bangla Road?

Our University Press started selling a Monopoly set some time ago. Haven't actually had a look yet.. a mite too expensive to get on a whim. Interesting that they're using a symbol for Monopoly Money now. I wonder if the little pieces you move around the board have been localized, too - wonder what they'd be, if that's the case. Elephant pants? Siamese sun helmet?

Well of course each place on the Phuket Monopoly Board paid for their square. An ingenious method of advertising in the middle of a busy mall, and good money for the promotor who thought of the noval idea. Nothing to be "disappointed" about.

As a 6 year old, I began learning the Glorious Principles of Capitalism by playing monopoly with my older cousins. It’s MONOPOLY, people. The very word reminds us of the rapacious potential of the corporate world and it’s rich oligarchs. Duh! Tim’s faux-surprise/disappointment that this game would dare involve the corporate world is totally unconvincing. We know he’s smarter than that. 😉

What a missed opportunity to really highlight the vast heritage/natural attractions etc. To put a generic shopping centre and a real estate agent on the Monopoly board is just sad. Say what you will about it, but its a fact that Bangla Road/Patong is by far the most well know street/area in Phuket but is not on there? While Tuk Tuks are one of the negatives here, I don't think any reasonable person can argue that they are not iconic, perhaps instead of the ferry? Off the top of my head there are some obvious omissions - Cherngtalay, Big Bhudda, Wat Chalong, aforementioned Tanon Bangla and Siray Island or even the old Standard Chartered bank and Thai Police buildings in Phuket Town. Even just straight up having the districts of Phuket - theres only 3. If you want to throw in a sub district or two like Rawai etc, then that works. Would have been fun to have squares representing local foods - Durian, Som Tum, Tom Yum and Phad Kra Pow? Again, a HUGE missed opportunity by the TAT/Phuket's equivalent, by buying up a few thousand boards and distributing for free worldwide you have an inexpensive/fun/interactive way to promote the Island.
