How time flies. This is 30 years ago. I visited Thailand (Patong) for the first time as recently as 2009. But even that is getting to be a long time ago...

I arrived in Phuket for the first time in December 1987, at the tail end of a 10 month solo journey around the world. Dirt roads and rustic thatched hut type bars were common place. I returned in June 1992 and couldn't believe the changes that had occured in that short amount of time. I haven't been back to Phuket since, so seeing this footage has renewed those vivid memories for me. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for posting! I came first time in 1999 and stayed in Patong but it was already a lot busier than what is shown in your video although there were still fields in between Ratuthit and Nanai roads and a big muddy market where Jungceylon now sits! Nanai was still pretty quiet in 1999. Same as Dave - I never go to Patong now!

In 1998 I built house on the hillside off Nanai road. The plot was chosen because I assumed it would remain a safe and peaceful haven from the already bustling sea front and Soi Bangla. How wrong I was!

I was in Phuket Thailand 1992,, I hear "Billy" about 07:00 in video, I remember listening to his music then, and even bought cassette tape of "Billy". I still have it, I met a girl at Dimple Video lounge and we wrote each other and the letters stopped coming and I still want to find the sweet girl I met , her name was O Canta Wong and she was a bar tender at Dimple Video Lounge, I know Wong is Chinese name, but her Dad was Chinese and her mom was Thai, anyway if anyone has advice how I can find my sweet Angel O Camta Wong please message me on Google+. Jerry Don Jocoy is my name I am on Facebook,, Supet and Yomjong Siriganta were my taxi drivers, I wrote them too for a few years, and the last letter I wrote was before the tsunami maybe a year before,, but no response, thank you for the video I really lived Phuket, it was like small town feeling, and I truly loved it there ...

Great post. We first went to Phuket in 1991 and this post is very much how I remember it. Unlike everyone else I don't think it's a horrible place now. Nothing is permanent, populations grow and things change. I'm glad I have these memories.

While that is true, for younger people like me it’s still a bummer because we never get to experience how these places were back when they were raw and authentic and now it seems like every island and beach is becoming commercialized. At least put effort in preserving the native/local culture and natural beauty so future generations can enjoy it also. I was born in 99 which is way too late and now I wish I saw Thailand in the 70s and 80s

I moved to Thailand on Feb 3rd, 1993. I remember clearly how nice it was back then. I actually lived in Patong for my first year here. It was pleasant enough back then. I clearly remember to big field that is now paved over. What a horrible place is now!! I haven't been to Patong in a couple of years. If I never go there again, that suits me fine. Thanks for the video, Lars! Good memories. Too bad it turned out the way it did.

Yes, one huge field between Nanai road and Song Roy Pee. It was a natural flood plain, and the reason Patong now floods every wet monsoon season.

damn. my first visit was in 2004. So mad at myself now because I was ignorant in the 90s and easily could have gone to Thailand as often as I wanted. I was working Los Angeles California and the flights from LAX were and are still convenient.

It looked much like this when I lived here from 1997 to 1999. It's sad to see what a hellhole it has become with mass tourism and rampant overdevelopment.

i left for good in 2006, went to visit a freind two years ago, it was weird, it made me feel how the usa used to feel upon returning from thailand. people were rude, place was unlivable.
