Exactly! The older dogs/wolves/coyotes in a pack will always eat before the pups. They need to survive to protect and feed the pack as well as procreate. Pups are loved but not placed before them in the “lunch line.” It’s a matter of survival of the fittest when it comes to the pups. If a pup is lost, it will likely be mourned for a short time, but in their world, dogs know it can easily be replaced. If an adult capable of hunting and procreating is lost, the whole pack can suffer.

Your a very kind hearted gentleman for taking on the care of this poor lil guy. Puppy care isn't cheap. The only thing I'd like to reflect on is that you sometimes refer to him as IT.
