this is my all-time phyllis hyman song....i have this song on 45 r.p.m. such a warm and magnificent voice, my hear aches because her career wasn't as large as it should have been. why does it seem that those who are supremely talented are overlooked where those whose vocal ability is suspect at best have careers that shoot into the stratosphere? i've never understood that.
@sofumba2 жыл бұрын
It happens because she was legitimately TALENTED, and would not compromise her integrity, or bow down to the Music Industry's Slave tactics. It was too much for her delicate mind to battle alone, so with her Mental Illness she ended up self-medicating, and just checking out.....Rest in Jesus, Phyllis, you were my special Friend.....

Although I love this song, I really prefer "The Answer Is You" from the same album. That should have been her biggest song/single then. It would have been totally different for her career...

Phyllis, Although 21 years have gone by since you decided to quiet the madness, your Memory Remains as Vivid today as ever. I seldom go more than a few days without thinking of you. Whenever I watch this video, I remember standing just off stage and smiling. We shared a bunch of laughs ,and also too many tears together. There will never be anyone able to replace the wonderful friend that I found in you. Rest well pretty lady. I'll miss you always. Your pal, Kenny.

MrKennylun This woman is the epitome of everything. Knowing that she's your friend brings tears to my eyes. My mom and aunts were on their way to her concert that fateful day! I was so young but I felt every single word with such depth. Hence the reason I'm an artist today. Anytime I need inspiration I come back to videos like this! The pain is her voice made me feel the pains she felt in her heart. Only a true gift from God can have that effect. I wanna tell her story one day. I feel it's my destiny. You're so blessed to have known her! I'll be looking for you one day... I need your story! ✨ Happy New Year and God bless!

Hey there music family....obviously we will never know what drove the late, great Phyllis Hyman to commit suicide as she is not here in the physical plane to tell us why. But in the spirit of Phyllis, she often shared how much she wanted to be loved.....not by us, her adoring fans, but a love of intimacy ...which she was never able to attain. Surely I can't say why it happen...bur her lifelong search was simple...only to be "loved ". RIP you sophisticated lady!

Also, someone commented about the microphone cord. Even well into the 1990s, Phyllis always preferred the electric mic over the cordless one, because the cordless ones were liable to give static, or "crack" her notes. Also, when speaking with Dick Clark, she sounds a bit exhausted... I don't know how else to put this, but she was "driven" by exhaustion; it kept her mind off of her vices; drugs, alcohol, men, and food... Yes, she was THAT mentally ill. I love her and I miss her so much.

Great rare footage-plus! She's singing this song live, but also with a full orchestra! I've seen her live in concert 12 times; sometimes with a 10-piece band and 3 back-up singers, sometimes with a 3-piece band and ZERO back-ups singers. But never, never with a full LIVE orchestra. This recording on her album does not have as much harp, piano, or "Miles Davis-like" trumpet, and the violins are fuller and more dramatic, too. Just RARE to see somethign like this. Oh, how I wish I were there.

THIS is one of the black national anthems of America. A celebration of both joy and sadness. Which implies, simultaneously - fury, desperation, hope & devotion. It does it in an operatic fashion, though unintentionally & spontaneously so. Such expressiveness, depth & sublety combined and full of forceful emotion is par none beyond but very few only. Saw her live in Chgo loop, summer 90. Felt privileged instantly. Only a great old soul, having gone thru many incarnations, can sing like her. We are celestial sojourners. She seems to have a lot of japanese features in her facial construction - a presuppositional evidence of past lives spent in Nippon ...
