It's a beautiful instrument. Hyman was one of the best singers. She had a monumental stage presence with a persona to match Seeing and hearing her in a live setting was always a captivating event. Nancy Wilson's influence on Hyman is undeniable.

You are on it! I promise you I just pointed out the Phyllis Hyman influence on Toni on the Toni Braxton voice explained video by BMA. Regina Belle was definitely influenced as well. There is no way she wasn't influenced. She also will whisper the end of a phrase the way PH does, especially in "Best Friend" from her debut. Whole song sounds like a PH B-side.

You’re absolutely right! A lot of jazz vocalists stick I certain words depending on their range. “Dweee weee” (higher registers) “Shooby ba doo” (lower registers) 🎉💖🙌🏽

One of her signature sound or vocal affectation which I found myself adopting is the slight crack at the end of her phrasing when she sings the sad songs, which makes her sound as if she’s crying. It’s a slight crack or squeak similar to how people sound when they’re breathing while crying. She didn’t grow up doing the traditional church gospel but rather through school choral singing.

I love Her songs Old Friend as well as “I refuse to be lonely” Have you seen her funny but impressive clip of her being extra at Angela Bofill’s mini show which culminated in an improv-type of singing where they make up both the words and the melody as they go , with only the help of a piano accompanist’s baseline chord and tempo?
