Phyllostachys glabrata 花哺鸡竹 chicken bamboo is a rare, cold tolerant, large sized temperate bamboo from China which is a bamboo collectors item, with very nicely coloured culm sheaths reminiscent of some heirloom chicken breeds` feather colours, hence its Chinese common name. It is often distributed in the West under the fantasy name Phyllostachys sp. `Shanghai 3`.
