Thanks so much for sharing this report. I’ve been fighting Glaucoma for 8 years now with significant vision loss. Five surgeries later I’m doing pretty well. I run my dog 3-4 times a week and also have an elliptical here at home. I truly believe diet and exercise are the key to good overall health. And as what you say, good overall health is probably good for Glaucoma. At 62, I’ve got a lot more to do and I’m taking steps (literally!) to keep going! Thanks again!

Thanks for all the great info in this video and on this channel! I notice on days I feel eye pain that it is difficult to go biking because my eye hurts. I have had a stabbing pain in my left eye since 2013 which always happens in the mornings and goes away when I eat fruit , a granola bar, something with sugar. I notice the stabbing pain to be more of an issue in the winter time but it has occurred in the spring and summer time, mostly when the weather changes, like a day or two before it rains or snows. I will make sure to add more leafy greens into my diet.

Dr. Richardson, Thank you so much for these videos, I just love them. I have mild pigmentary glaucoma (had iridotomies done in both eyes a couple months ago and my iris is 'much flatter'). I have no field loss and hope to never have field loss of course. I know with pigmentary glaucoma they always say that exercise can induce a pigment storm. Should I stick to walking or swimming then? Thank your for your time. I know you must be a busy man
@eyemdla5 жыл бұрын
Hello Samantha. Although there is a risk of “pigment storm” with strenuous exercise, this must be balanced with the need to maintain good cardiovascular fitness. As such I generally advocate a regular aerobic fitness routine including such activities as swimming, brisk walking, elliptical trainers, biking, etc.

Thank you. I appreciate these videos so much. I was devastated once my doctor told me I had glaucoma. And now I’m and disappointed and a little angry that my doctors (I have been treated by 3 different ones within my HMO) have not shared any valuable information with me about this disease. I have questioned them about a lot and the answers they give me are so intentionally vague I barely even want to discuss anything with them anymore. Like why didnt they tell me about the rffects of yoga (downward positions) and the different sleeping positions on ocular pressure? Those seem like simple things to tell a patient. I’m in my early 30s and I got lasik in 2007. No eye doctor ever told me anything about having an enlarge cup to disk ratio prior to my lasik. I’m believe that surgery had something to do with me developing glaucoma. My pressure is also low. It has to my knowledge not been above 16. Have there been any notable articles about the correlation between lasik and glaucoma? If so, could you please do a video on it? It would be much appreciated.
@DrDavidDRichardsonMDSanMarino4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the topic suggestion for a future video. I agree that it would be worthy of discussion. With regard to the unsatisfactory communication from your prior doctors, you are in good company. HMOs tend to work their doctors so hard by scheduling so many patients and demanding so much paperwork that the doctors hardly have any time to actually care for their patients. That's one of the reasons I dropped all HMOs and other insurance plans years ago. Now I am able to spend the time necessary with each of my patients to explain their conditions and address their concerns.

iPhones have an accelerometer built in. The iPhone by default tracks steps that is accessible via the "Activity" app. If you have an Apple watch, that tracks exercise even better. The Activity app shows history of activity during the day, days of the week etc. so you can monitor trends. Apple watch tries to encourage activity. Tracks heart rate etc. Android has equivalent features although typically not from a single vendor. Any fitness tracker will tracks steps and many will track other forms of exercise such as swimming. Including Garmin, Fitbit, Polar, etc. YMMV. I have my own tonometer. I've continued to notice that moderate exercise seems to lower my short term pressure in my eye. Not clear if it stays low, but the lowering effect during and immediately after is pretty clear in my eye.

Do you lift weights? Which exercises do you prefer
@truthjunkie35 жыл бұрын
@@deepu-zv3iv I think the prevailing theories are that weight lifting is strenuous exertion and is assumed to cause a pressure spike during exertion. I would presume most ophthalmologists would advise against high exertion, straining weight lifting. Although I would expect that for moderate weight training the benefits outweigh risks. I tend to prefer mild to moderate aerobic activity for eye benefits. Walking, running, swimming. Anything that doesn't involve high exertion.

Hi David; just let you know that I am suffering Glaucoma and cataracts for over 35 years, and at all times I was gym doing all kinds of Crossfit workout for all most 6 days workout a week. In fact, I was able to control both without drug and surgery having perfect eyes sight 20/20 and eyes Pressure about 19 WITHOUT ANY DRUGS. However in 2017 I made mistake and I allowed Cataract Surgery by BEST Professor of University of Toronto; As result in last three years I lost more than %50 of my eye sight and now using 7 drops and tables to control Glaucoma that its pressure between 25 to 35! and said I would become blind. Thus, I honestly believe to workout to control Glaucoma and cataracts
@eyemdla4 жыл бұрын
That's very unusual for IOP to elevate after cataract surgery (usually the opposite occurs). As for working out, cardiovascular fitness is important for the health of the optic nerve. It's primarily heavy lifting that is the issue with transient elevation in IOP. I have also been crossfit training for the last decade and feel it is a great choice of exercise for most.

Hello Minnu. Current research suggests that sleeping with the head elevated 15-30 degrees is ideal (assuming one is sleeping on the back). Congenital glaucoma is very different than adult glaucoma. Treating one should not contribute to the other.

@eyemdla5 жыл бұрын
Many medications can have an effect on fetal development. However, the amount of glaucoma eye drops absorbed into the bloodstream is quite small (especially with proper technique). It is true that some glaucoma medication are not generally prescribed during pregnancy. That being said, there is no convincing evidence that treating a mother’s glaucoma would result in glaucoma in an infant.

@@ashleychen307 Hi Ashley! I got the ICARE2, there are places you can get it and it is about $3000. I used HSA health $ to pay for it. I know it is expensive. But, I am only 54 and do so many things that require vision and had unexplained loss despite being treated with drops and slt. It has turned out to be super easy for me to use. It is pretty fool proof and will not take a measurement if you don't have it perfectly set up. And, I am a baby when it comes to things in my eye and it has been not even a concern at all! I take 6 measurements per day and no irritation etc. Easy peasy! Now that I have it, I have discovered that when I wake up in the AM my pressures are way up over target. I feel like I am young (54 ha!!) and I am going to have this the rest of my life and I had damage that occurred even though I was being treated with drops and SLT. I am panicking that I will lose my vision, so, getting it I feel more control - I have higher pressures at certain times of day and I can take drops when I need to take them. Because of the data I got about my pressures overnight, I am returning to doctors early(they wanted to wait 3 months) to potentially get SLT asap in the "good" eye because the pressures in that eye are crazy higher than we thought. If you want more specific info. or want to talk let me know!! I also have no ties to tonometer sellers ha!! PS - you can also "rent" tonometers for a week or so This would also be a more inexpensive route to go - I feel like I have gained a lot of info. in the 2 weeks I have had it. However, I feel like it will help me in future like after SLT to see if it worked, see if I could take fewer drops etc. Sorry this is so long :)
