Just thought i'd chime in and mention that Sanity closed down two years ago. It's an online only retailer now that specifically grey imports at a premium price ($50 - $100+ pre shipping). Your options today are JB Hi-Fi and Op Shops. However, with Sony and Disney opting out of Australia now, JB Hifi did reveal to their shareholders late last year that they're going to slow down on Physical Media and prepare to replace it with a "new product range" as they can't buy most new releases anymore. So... Yeah... as a fellow Aussie you have to import online, scour ebay and gumtree. Sucks but that is what it is.

I thought I had read that Sony would be making a deal to print Disney's media. A shame to hear the opposite is true.

I agree mate but I still import a few from the uk and America only when Australia and New Zealand don’t get the release of the movie elsewhere online or in shops

I'm still bummed we didn't get the Blu-Ray release of the 2003 TMNT series here. I'm more and more tempted to get a region free player.

Great (albeit kinda sad) video! The state of having to essentially rely on one corporate entity to import special editions/certain titles reminds me of being a bookseller.

Pretty much the same deal in New Zealand. I don't blame the retailers. But long gone are the glory days where bookstores, big box stores, petrol stations, music stores, even petrol stations carried optical media. JBs are here and carry them, though. But I miss the browsing.

I’ve been talking about this as a collector for years I bought the godfather 4k trilogy standard set the quality in comparison to the us standard trilogy set is night and day the aussie boxset is a flimsy cardboard box the opens at the top with both version of the godfather part 3 the us release has both versions of part 3 plus a bonus disc

thank you, been trying to say this many times! a lot of countries do not have all of the great releases like in the US 😢 and import is expensive not only because 1USD is IDR15, 000 in my country, but also taxes on top of that. when US collectors say "buy and support physical media", it really requires massive sacrifice for many others outside US 😢

I definitely wanted to note that in the video given I still come from a place of privilege when it comes to what is easily accessible to me and other people from Australia. I think if anything just do what makes you happy and collect the films you want to collect without putting too much of a financial burden on yourself. Don’t feel pressured or that ‘physical media is dying’ when it’s not.

A big problem with JB Hi Fi is they advertise literally thousands of movies and TV shows on their website, but none of the ones I want are ever in their actual shops. (I have a typed up list) For about four years they listed 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea, but it was always on "back order". Last year they finally took it off their site. That's just one example. Another one is the King of Queens boxed set. I've literally never seen it in any of their shops. Something that seems to be universal is we can't use their website's search function to check every JB store in the state or within a certain kilometre range. It only shows us stores within about 5km of a particular post code or suburb. It's a stupid way to do things and it surely loses them sales.

Yeah their website doesn’t have the best design for being accurate to actual store levels. I don’t think it’s always a problem with the website but how the information is input, given I’ve called stores before to check the stock and they say there’s stock then they check and there actually isn’t stock.

Excellent video, part of the huge issue we have in Australia is the distributors f*ck us quite deliverately, not the stores.. The distributors, the "aussie tax" as we always moan about. We're also a much smaller market than we think we are. But physical media collecting is more important now than its ever been because theyre trying to take it away,.

I picked up Crow 4k steelbook at JB hifi. Only option is Umbrella, however WOW HD have cheapest prices which also have better packaging for delivery. Also Arrow Video, MVD shop, Vinager Syndrome and lastly eBay. U taking a risk with Amazon especially steelbooks sometimes get crushed.

I don't think there's much here in Adelaide.. Once I stumbled in a shop which orders stuff in but that's the only one I've found unless it's a convention. It's Jb or op shops

my local jb hi fi recently renovated and went from having a pretty extensive CD range to *just* the popular section, and even that is pretty limited. and maybe this is just a canberra issue, but prices at op shops (mostly vinnies) are getting so high. my local vinnies sells CDs at $3-4 and any popular artist will be marked up even higher. they dont even check for scratches or anything

Yeah I’ve noticed that about the CD sections as well. I used to collect soundtracks but the soundtrack sections at most stores don’t exist anymore

The good thing about living next to the US is that importing anything is not that expensive most of the time is free shipping on Amazon

We get free shipping on Amazon too, sometimes in orders over $59 AUD but it’s not the worst option when you bundle things together. Most of the time I’d prefer to support local or get direct from the distributors like from UK stores. I only really use Amazon for the occasional sale and for importing US releases like Scream/Shout Factory and Criterion.

I love the JB buy one get one free timing, especially when you time it right AND get 20% off aswell 😊 And yes, I've been wanting the Pitch Black 4k for what seems like years now that we haven't received here in Oz and always am keeping an eye out for on the cheap from the U.S. I feel your struggles brother and appreciate what you're doing.

The Arrow Video release of Pitch Black is really nice, with a great UHD disc.

@CollectorCreations I'll look into that, thankyou. I'm a physical collector from day one. Have been one to search and obtain American release DVDs from back in the day for their exclusives. We had a good Aussie exchange rate generally. Nowadays it's a bit harder and I find it difficult, like yourself, to justify buying certain releases. Especially since Disney pulled out and then released one of my all time wants, True Lies, and now we can't get it unless we import it or buy from a boutique retailer.

The amount the studios are saving by not putting a Blu Ray in with the 4K would be miniscule

Yet they still do it. It’s weird how they are limiting what’s in a case in Australian releases but the US has these four format release bundles now with DVD/Blu-Ray/4K/Digital. It’s a strange structure
