Quantities that can be measured are known as physical quantities.
Measurement is the process of comparison of the magnitude of that quantity with a fixed
Unit of a physical quantity is a well defined standard in terms of which similar quantities can be measured.
Choice of unit
1. Convenient size i.e., the unit should neither be too small nor be too large
2. It should be well defined and easily accessible everywhere.
3. The value of unit should not change with space and time.
Unit which is independent of any other unit or which can neither be changed nor can be related to any other fundamental unit
Mass , length , time , temperature, current and amount of substance
Units are those which depend on the fundamental units or which can be expressed in terms of the fundamental.
Volume = l x l x l
Speed = distance/time
Density = mass/volume

A light year is the distance travelled by light in vacuum, in one year.
Guidelines for writing the units
1. Symbols for units of quantities are written with a small letter e.g., m,kg,s
2. Symbol for a unit named after a scientist is to be written with capital letter e.g., K(Kelvin)
3. Symbols for any units are not to be followed by a full stop.
4. Symbols for any units are not written in plural forms. E.g., the symbol for 10 kilograms s 10 kg not 10 kgs
5. While writing a name for a unit, it should always be written in small letters.
Length can be considered as distance between two points.

Measurement of length using a measuring scale
Mass is the measure of the quantity of matter contained in an object. Mass of an object is fixed and it does not change from place to place
Mass of an object is measured by comparing it with standard mass. The process is called weighing. And the standard mass used for comparison is called weight.
Types of balances
For measuring a mass of an object the object is placed on one pan( left side) and suitable standard weights are placed on the other pan( right side). The total of the standard weights placed on right side pan gives the mass of the given object.

Time is the defined as the interval between two events occurring at given place

Other units of time - minute, hour, day , etc

Water clock , sundial clock, sand clock

Measurement of temperature
Temperature of an object is the degree of hotness or coldness of that object.
SI unit of temperature - kelvin
Other units of temperature
Celsius ( degree Celsius )
Fahrenheit ( degree Fahrenheit )
Thermometer is a device used to measure temperature.
Types of Thermometers
Laboratory
Clinical
A common laboratory thermometer consists of a fine capillary tube of a glass having a uniform bore. At one end of the capillary tube, a thin glass bulb is provided. The bulb is filled with pure mercury. The other end of the capillary tube is sealed, after removing air from it. The capillary tube is protected by a thick glass tube called stem. Markings are made on stem called degrees.
Scales on Thermometers
Lower fixed point: It is a melting point of a pure ice at standard atmospheric pressure.
Upper fixed point: It is boiling point of a pure water at standard atmospheric pressure.
A clinical thermometer is used to measure the body temperature of humans and animals. Its construction is most similar to laboratory but its size is small. A clinical thermometer has a constriction or kink in its capillary tube
Precautions in using clinical Thermometers
1. The thermometer should be washed before as well as after every use by using antiseptic lotion or with clean water
2. Before measuring the temperature of a person , ensure that mercury level is below 35 degree Celsius.
3. Never hold the thermometer by bulb.
4. Keep the thermometer properly under the tongue of the person for at least one minute.
Measurement of Area
The amount of surface occupied by an object or a plane figure is called its surface area.

Area of regular shapes
Convert 15 m into cm
Convert 5 km into m and cm
Convert 1.25 m into mm
Calculate the number of seconds in a day
