@@dr.polaris6423 I remember as a small child I had a paleo-encyclopedia with comical cartoonish illustrations and the phytosaur was the only critter in the book that utterly terrifying, and given that I am Greek I found it ironic that its name implied herbivory.

Hello Dr. Polaris. Was recently in St. Johns AZ and obtained permission to find remains of the fascinating Phytosaur. We found scutes, bones and lots of coprolite with little bones in them. So much fun. We have sliced into the coprolite and actually found some bones fragments and what appears to be some pink opal. Wish I could post a picture, but you've probably seen something familiar. Going to subscribe to listen to more of your videos. Thanks for sharing.

To add to the general conversation something I've noticed that after every major extinction it seems the first to re-occupy the land (when land was occupied), is Alligator look-alikes and in the water Crab like creatures, even before there were archosaurs the Amphibians filled in behaviorally as Crocs. Starting with the Cambrian, this is true for almost every major apocalypse.

Maybe having the nostrils on top of the skull gave the phytos an edge as far as being stealthy and inconspicuous. A huge redondosaur could conceivably keep an even lower profile in the water than a smaller salt water crocodile. Just a bump on the surface...

@ 0:33 I'm in the same league, only a little earlier in the process. You got any advice for me? (I'm sadly not in Britain, but Kansas).
@sirmeowthelibrarycat3 жыл бұрын
👨🏻🏫 Hello. Mr Teacher here. My advice to you is this. Organise your schedule and keep to it as much as possible. Organise your research results very carefully. Include regular reviews of your work. Organise and organise and . . . you follow me? That way you should keep focused on task and achieve excellent results. This is how I obtained my five degrees, albeit not at PhD level (so far). Kind regards from England 🏴.

What does basal and derived mean
@Dr.IanPlect Жыл бұрын
Basal; On a cladogram or phylogenetic tree, the lineage nearest the root or for clades further away from the root, the lineage nearest the common ancestor. In other words, the lineage/s that evolved first after a split. Derived; a trait evolved in a lineage of a common ancestor, but not present in that common ancestor. There's more to it, and perhaps the terms I used also require explanation; let me know.

here's some speculative evolution ideas: what if one of these like the mystriosuchus had more time to evolve and became fully aquatic? Interesting to think about, though now that I think about it more the Late Triassic oceans already had a lot of large predators in the icthyosaurs and plesiosaurs....
@jrodowens3 жыл бұрын
..and in the Jurassic would have basically just what you're suggesting, courtesy of the Crocodylomorpha clade (close to and including the lineage that would survive til today.) You probably know about the teleosaurids and other marine 'crocs', but had to throw that out there!
