yeah. had Sv650 as first bike and followed by daytona 675, CB400. went to Cambodia and hired a scooter, its fun in its own way. now im getting a scooter as a second bike. so much easier to ride around :P

I went from Northampton, England to Galashiels, Scotland (~300 miles) on a 2002 air cooled Vespa ET4 125. The seating position of a scooter is well suited to long distance riding, they're just a bit slow, but definitely not too slow.

I have had a similar issue on my gt200 and was equally dumbfounded. I was about to do just what you have and strip her down this weekend. Then I saw this video. Lo and behold! I too had a cracked vacuum hose. Replaced it and whamo! Cranked first twist of the wrist. Thank you very much for this video. You probably saved me half a hundred man hours tearing that this down.

I noticed you had a crack in your inlet manifold. I have an Aprilia SR Motard (same engine) and these rubbery inlet manifolds are known to crack within 15000km and will cause your bike to run lean. symptoms will include bad starting and erratic idling. may cut out too. there's often hidden cracks on the under side too so I've heard.

Hi ive noticed my piaggio fly with the same engine has the same crack on the manifold, is there anything I can do to fix this other than rebuilding the whole engine

Pretty much all the Piaggio LEADER engines from before 2004 as well as air cooled have these shitty intake manifolds, which tend to crack all the way through on one side where the material is thinnest, causing a vacuum leak. In most cases, the engine may fire a tiny bit as it turns over but it will not start. I have had 3 air cooled Piaggio scooters and each one has had the same problem with the intake manifold. Luckily they are easy to replace for cheap. You can use caulk to temporarily seal the cracks, but it will not work long term

@@gabrielwalker421 Oh yeah tell me about it! I tried with 2- part epoxy resin and it failed pretty much instantly. I have a new idea/product I'm hoping will work better next time if in an emergency. 2 part epoxy putty! This stuff is much stronger and designed to seal burst plumbing pipes. Apparently it sets under water though I've never tried, however, I did use it to essentially re-weld an exhaust heat guard mount tab back to the exhaust by wrapping it around. Admittedly, the stuff eventually broke away but still acts as a kind of filler/cushion ensuring that the exhaust guard doesn't flap back n forth on the remaining two screws/tabs. So I'm confident that it could silence an exhaust hole for quite a long time if you wrapped it the whole way around. I'm actually using the stuff as one of the main materials for a 2-stroke hobby engine I've built and wondering if I could make a complete replacement piaggio inlet manifold out of it too by making some moulds.

Hi Mitch, your clips help me out now to get to know my Fly 2013 without damaging the plastic panels. Before the Fly I rode a Zip fourstroke and experienced the same thing. Nearly invisible cracks in the black rubber fuel hose. It would stop running all of a sudden when half the fuel was gone, it started badly sometimes and wouldn't run smoothly. Keep up the good work, you're doing just fine!

Always check the hoses. I had a similar intermittent issue with my Piaggio Skipper. Found out it was a rupture in a vacuum hose as well. Cut a piece off, stuck back on. Worked fine. At least my hose was in an easier location :D

That's right with the heat of the engine and pulling the hoses the rubber will not be so flexible and it won't seal like it use to do. You can cut a piece off or change the whole damn thing..

Glad you fixed it. My Piaggio has progressively fallen apart from snapped brake cable to starter motor to non working digital clock to non working speedo to now a broken starter button. Only done 8000kms snd it doesn't have a kickstart either. Good luck with yours =) Mates Kymco hasn't missed a beat.

I have a beemer and just got a piaggio fly 150 , is so much fun easy to park anywhere and it seems that drivers dont hate scooters riders as much as motocyclists. excellent video my man. Keep an eye on the intake manifold boot too sometimes they Dry rot and crack at least up here in Indiana they do on the Chinese scooters.

Hi I have a gilera runner vx125. My bikes started to cut out when riding sounding like it’s not getting fuel. I just wanted to know when this happened to your bike did it make the engine cut off and also make the tone of the exhaust sound different. Your help and input would be so helpful? The tubes are made of some kind of rubber material, which can become brittle over time

Hello Mr Mitch. You seem to be a very approchable guy and I like your style. I am from the Philippines and I am having a problem with my 2013 Vespa Lx ie Touring. I bought it with only 2,500 kms on it. Problem is when I take it out for a ride lasting 30mis to 1 hour there would be no problems except when you turn off the engine and try restarting. It just wont. I have to wait 30mins to 1 hour for it to "cool" down a bit and then it starts readily and I can go home. I tried riding it for 1 hour went home turned off the ignition, didn't start again. I placed an electric fan from the backside, started it after 15 mins, started again. Changed the battery, spark plug to (NGK CR9eb), changed the oil to (10w40 because it is so hot here in the Philippines) but still doesn't start when it is hot. Please help if you have time. You can charge me a fee if you would, I just hope I find a fix for this problem. Thank you very much.

The same problem drives me crazy for a while on my Piaggio Liberty! I didn't want to replace the hose because of the black stuff on it because I didn't know what it is made for. I had just cuted it shorter and it worked (it was damaged near the carburator's pipe). Do you keep this black thing ? Is it a kind of filter ?

hej Mitch i dont speak english very well I have a problem, when I start the engine, it is equal to empty gas, half throttle and when I drive 2 minutes, it is no longer half gas but works 10 seconds and motorcycle turns itself off .. is a problem the e choke or something else?

Did you find out what the problem is? Mine also uses ~5L/100K. Just bought it second hand. A mechanic told me it could be the auto-choke is staying open therefore running rich all the time. Makes sense, but the wiring loom the choke part is connected to seems inaccessible.

The problem with mine was the petrol vacuum valve. When flat out the vacuum wasnt enough to keep the 'petcock' fully open so the engine cut off due to fuel starvation, soon as you closed the throttle the vacuum increased and the fuel flowed again. Scooter would run OK flatout [55mph] for about 1 minute then just die, easing back on the throttle would let it run again. hope this helps .

I'm in Florida so I guess stoping by is out of the question. I rode it on and off. About once every couple of weeks. This time I went about 2 months without riding it. Put fresh gas in it. It will crank for about 5 seconds and then shut off. It has less than 3000 miles on it. @@MitchsScooterStuff

Thanks a lot I just got Piaggio fly 50cc 2017 . It is really a good one Thanks a lot for your recommendation . My Piaggio fly according to the law in Germany where I live is not allowed to drive faster than 50k which makes it a bit difficult to over take sometimes. Do you know a way to make it drive a bit faster? I don't want to break the rules, but it is really dangerous sometimes in Berlin streets for me especially when I want to over take.

Are you aware that both Piaggio and Vespa along with Gilera, Derbi and Moto Guzzi are in fact the same company? I cannot say for sure but I think the chances of the them using different hoses for Piaggios and Vespas is pretty unlikely.
