널리 알려진 프랑스의 걸작 샹송 ＜Les Feuilles Mortes＞(枯葉)가 원곡. 헝가리 태생의 피아니스트이기도 한 조셉 코스마(1969년 8월 7일에 타계)가 1945년에 초연된 가사를 붙인 것이 샹송 ＜고엽＞으로, 1946년의 프랑스 영화 『밤의 문』에서 주연인 이브 몽땅(Yves Montand)이 처음 불렀으며, 출판은 1947년이었다. 팝송으로는 자니 머서(Johnny Mercer)가 1950년에 붙인 것으로서, 같은 해 6월에 녹음된 빙 크로스비의 레코드, 혹은 프랑스어와 영어로 부른 에디뜨 삐아프(Edith Piaf)의 레코드로 히트했다. 1955년에는 피아니스트인 로저 윌리엄스(Roger Williams)의 레코드가 밀리언히트가 되어 윌리엄스를 일약 스타로 만들었다. 또 1956년에는 존 크로포드와 클리프 로버트슨 주연으로 콜롬비아 영화 『Autumn Leaves』가 만들어져, 냇 킹 콜(Nat King Cole)이 이 곡을 부르고 있다.
빙 크로스비, 프랭크 시나트라, 토니 베넷, 냇 킹 콜, 네덜란드의 재즈 가수 리타 라이스, 로저 윌리엄스, 재즈의 캐논볼 애덜리(Cannonball Adderley)와 마일즈 데이비스(Miles Davis) 등 수많은 가수들에 의해 불려지거나 연주된다.

Am 60 yrs old.. and I grew up listening to my Mother's voice singing The Autumn Leaves till I fall asleep and my Father will hum till he too fall asleep on a hameck.. .SONG THAT NEVER DIES.. only when someone stop hearing familiar love in music.. until then.. while living?. Unending beauty of it's sound and colors of life with in this song remains.
