I remember part of this piece played on an episode of M*A*S*H called "Morale Victory" where Major Winchester tries to give hope to a soldier he managed to save his leg, but the soldier had lost hope because he lost much of the use of one of his hands and he was a concert pianist. Charles gave him this piece. And he said one of the best lines in the series.... "Don't you see? Your hand may be stilled, but your gift cannot be silenced if you refuse to let it be. The gift does not lie in your hands. I have hands David. Hands that can make a scalpel sing. More than anything in my life I wanted to play, but I do not have the gift. I can play the notes, but I cannot make the music. You have performed Liszt, Rachmaninoff, Chopin. Even if you never do so again, you have already known a joy I can never know as long as I live. Because the true gift is in you head, and in your heart and in your soul. Now you can shut it off forever, or you can find new ways to share your gift with the world - through the baton, the classroom or the pen. As to these works, they're for you, because you and the piano will always be as one."

The Best interpretation I ever heard of this masterpiece. This is the version with the magical conducting by Foster, not the later version with Slatkin (very good too). In the same vinyl it was with the Concerto in G (Dir. Foster) and the very beautiful Fauré's Fantaisie op. 111 with the marvelous conducting by De Burgos.

Please, can you tell us who is the conductor and the orchestra? She recorded this concerto twice. One with Lawrence FOSTER and the London Philharmonic Orchestra (around 1974 - DECCA) and the other with Leonard SLATKIN conducting the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra (around 1991 - BMG). Wich one is this???
