Fantastic! Great performance of one of my favourite pieces of music. Clarity, precision, humour.

What a great performance, the Soloist is absolutely solid and precise, how this music really requires to be, the orchestra such a good companion as well the conductor. Congratulations for this good rendition of such an amazing work!

Wonderful! Congrats to all! (BTW I think the ensemble is JUST THE RIGHT SIZE for what is really a "chamber" concerto).

Ligeti himself said that while it was performable with these small forces, a larger string section of 20-to-25 was preferable to get the correct volume and balance. And, of course, the sound would be different.

Does someone have a tip on how to listen better these kind of pieces? I'm too used to listen to romantic classical music. It is very hard for me to follow comtemporany classical.

Hiya! I absolutely understand. I'm actually the trombonist in AWS and I can say, I didn't always like stuff like this. I specifically remember hearing the battle scene from Strauss's Heldenleben while in college and thinking it sounded like a jumbled mess. I hated it. Over time I started to be able to pick out lines, and eventually to hear the organization of everything. I had an epiphany, all that material had always been there but i just wasn't capable of parsing it. I suggest the same for this type of music (any music, really), find ONE thing you find interesting. Then find two, then more. Those things will add up and, even if you never learn to love the entirety of the piece, you can at least appreciate aspects of it.

You have to imagine the different textures as colours. It sounds crazy but imagine what Ligeti is doing is the sonic equivalent of blending colours and brushstrokes in a painting. Once you're used to that, you'll be automatically mesmerised by the swirling textures he creates and the "jarring" dissonances will become secondary and you'll start to pay less attention to them

Sometimes a certain piece can be a gateway to really appreciating contemporary classical. Mine were Takemitsu's "Rain Spell" and Carl Vine's "Piano Sonata #1." I really appreciate the trombonist's comments and think that's great way to approach the music as well.

Did President Trump assist this performance since it was at a big official state venue?
@Baribrotzer
@Baribrotzer 2 жыл бұрын
Probably not - he didn't seem to have much interest in music or in anything that didn't make money for him - but I'm not sure if anyone official would have attended or been involved with something like this. Obama preferred jazz and pop music, and I'm not sure about Clinton or GWBush. Reagan was a big supporter of the arts, but this would have been a tough nut to crack for him.

Sometimes, I think these composers just did it for the fun of pranking the musicians who have to perform these things. Seeing them practising and laughing their asses off.

If you spend so much time and effort writing something, is it really a prank anymore even if you intended it to be at the beginning?

To get some idea why people take Ligeti seriously listen to the musicians' introduction to the horn trio at kzbin.info/www/bejne/q5KtY2WZpNeNf5Y.
