I love the facial expressions that Louis Chauvin and Scott Joplin give each other in the movie when it breaks into Maple Leaf Rag. And the fact that Joplin is played by Billy Dee Williams (Lando Calrissian) and Eubie Blake himself is in it is something I still cannot fathom after watching it for the first time almost 4 years ago.

@@SQUAREHEADSAM1912 There are a lot of syncopated rhythms in this arrangement which is the main core of what ragtime is. So this, in fact, is actual ragtime music.

@@LouFlos indeed it is ragtime but I’m referring to melody and harmony as well as few others, but this isn’t true to the form. ragtime wasn’t honkey tonk, it was classically written, composers were usually classically trained etc. just listen to Rifkin’s performances of Joplin, it’s very professional. They’re agreed upon the community to be some of the most reliable depictions of rag. (Especially Joplin’s rags)

I tried playing along with the film but it was extremely difficult. So I just played to a tempo that would be comfortable and just a tiny bit challenging enough for others to learn and play.
