Hi! I'm a classical pianist, have been playing for over 11 years an I got to say that you are insane! This progress for only a year is really impressive and I can see you're starting to get a lot more comfortable with different techniques and your musicality also is great for only this short time. Keep up the good work and two years from now you may be playing la campanella!

Great job! I'm 51 and I just started teaching myself about a month ago. Your 1 month progress is a little ahead of mine. I think it's because of the age difference. It's a little harder to get the hands to do what you want them too when you got a little arthritis. However I've noticed a bit of improvement since I started, they don't hurt nearly as bad as they used to. My memory and focus has gotten a bit better as well. So overall I think it's a win, but still pushing to get better.

I got chilled when you started using your right hand at 2:33. I'm looking into learning the piano after my whole life telling myself that I cannot learn music. I completely understand that to make this kind of progress, you either have to work really hard or have something for music. But this is truly inspiring.

Wow, fantastic progess! I'm amazed at how quickly you seem to get the hang of everything. I'm a music teacher (whose main instrument is piano) with plenty of beginner students and let me tell you that what you have achieved in one year is very remarkable. It shows that with enough motivation, you can find/discover hidden talents at any age. Also, I really hope you get yourself that upright you showed at the end because it would be very well deserved. Congrats once again!

This is really inspiring. For my art credit in high school, I am taking piano. We are also using the same book! (The first Alfred’s beginner book). I’ve been struggling recently with coordination and reading music which has been pretty discouraging. I’ve been thinking about dropping the class after 1 semester, but this has motivated me to stick with it for the year and hopefully continue after that. Absolutely incredible playing. I aspire to hopefully be at that level by 2024. Keep up the amazing work and dedication.

I started exactly two years ago after a 40 year break. I was 52 and didn’t know if it was even possible to learn as an adult. Surprisingly enough I had some muscle memory for scales, but had to learn to read music from scratch. After two months I decided to find a teacher to help me with technique and structure- I wanted to follow the classical path without the stress of doing the practical exams. With her guidance and daily practice I managed to progress through grades 3-7 and started gr 8 this year. It’s by far the best gift I’ve ever given myself! Wishing you well in your journey.

Got remotivated when the rona was over, bought an electric piano (Roland FP-10) and started taking lessons. Now I'm learning Ab Ovo - Joep Beving. Taking lessons the first couple of months is key. This also 37-year old self-taught pianist (although I was only a re-starter with years of formal instruction in my teens) approves. Your level of dedication is commendable! I'd like to suggest you try Christian Sinding's piece 'Frühlingsrauschen', which is basically a folly made to sound like it is a piece for super virtuosos but in reality isn't that hard at all. Will still give you goose bumps if you've learned it though, and be really impressive for your listeners - all while also being just a genuinely great piece of music.

@@Louise-xr5ok Yes piano teachers can be expensive, but it is possible to find suitable ones for a reasonable price. Pretty interesting I have same experience at 20 currently a year in a half. Weird to think how things could be if someone showed me the piano growing up or if I’m at a part in my life where wanting to be a pianist was only possible cause the time I found it and with you I’m not sure of course but I see the same in the comments of all older ages where it’s not forced onto the person at an early age but a passion to people nonetheless.

You're welcome... I had a teacher for first 2 years...then a small gap by myself... then a few months with a new teacher (now a time by myself) but definitely a new teacher in January there are many skills I need help with! However a time on your own is very useful...

@@ironhead23 at least you knew how to read sheets before? That's what I learned as child and learned myself a bit about harmony as child too. That's what helped as adult learning self taught. But these days our possibilities learning self taught are way bigger.. I didn't have any as child.

Hi I have a question. Did u become a self taught pianist just by using the books u linked in the description or did u also do something else? I have a piano but can't afford piano lessons and want to self teach myself but I don't know how

So I started with the Alfred's Adult All-in-One Course book 1, and I used the Czerny Practical Method for Beginners book a bit as well. On KZbin "Lets Play Piano Methods" does a great job giving you advice to get through the pieces in the Alfred's book. Once I got through Level 1 book (I probably rushed through this faster than I should have) I moved to the Level 2 book and then started to use more sheet music I found online and various KZbin pages with beginner support to try and advance without an instructor. Hope that helps!

Great work Chris! You chose some really difficult pieces for year 1. I posted a one year progress video a couple months back, but my song choices were way simpler than yours. Keep up the good work into year 2!

Appreciate your input, I’ll take it as a compliment! I can say with certainty it’s legitimate. I fail to see what benefit I would get out of pretending to learn piano as an experienced musician. I’m not in the business of making people feel bad about themselves. Anyways, have a good one!

Amazing on your first week or so you can play that nicely. Really amazing. I am a piano and guitar teacher at a music school, and I am super impressed. Took me like 3 years to be as good as you in your first couple of weeks xD. You are clearly talented and have a good feel and ear towards it. Really impressed by your hand independence right from the start.

@@ironhead23 this may seem like a weird recommendation, but you should learn the very first part of the third movement of Moonlight Sonata. It goes super fast up the piano. There’s a couple reasons why I recommend it. First, it follows a C# minor triad up the piano: that’s all it is. Second, it’ll build up hand speed by a lot. I spent a couple months where I would practice it for 10-15 minutes in the morning, and I have to say the progress it gave me was quite a lot. I think it would have a similar benefit for you. Learn the left hand too for that where it alternates between the root and fifth.
