My favorite of this group is Ashkenazy. A nice, clean, no-nonsense straightforward reading. The others are all great but more somewhat eccentric in their own way. When I was at Juilliard you would hear dozens pianists playing this piece in particular in the practice rooms on a daily basis. Some of them were fantastic.

My favorite is the Ashkenazy one. I tend to prefer slower versions - it's really off-putting when it feels like the pianist is struggling to keep up. The Geniusas and Lisitsa recordings are also nice. I think the Francois one might be nice also (but the recording quality muffles it a bit, and I really like this etude to be crisp). The Nakamura one was a bit fast IMO, It was so fast that it didn't sound clear to me. I usually love Bunin's stuff. Don't think this particular etude lends well to his lyricism though. Berezovsky sounded like he couldn't get his fingers to move, especially near the beginning the first time the left hand does the octave thing, the right hand just sounds stuck. The Cziffra one. . . oof. It sounds like he's barely hanging on to it. :/

This is one of the most potent pieces of music I have come across. I like this piece, when it's played in an even tempo, metronome-tight. But some of these interpretations feel rushed, and then it's not really that potent any more. The one I come back to all the time is Evgeny Kissin, but he's not in this compilation. Anyway, one of my favorites, and I'm impressed with anyone just learning the piece. Thanks for making this video.

1. Well-played, possible to hear thema and "sober" playing. Just bit too academic, it is rather perfectly played, than played with passion, but I admire that kind of playing, cuz there is nothing that can distract you. 2. Little bit slower, but not really. Everything well-expressed. Nothing is blurred or hidden. Every note can be heard, so every note counts. Stretto is absolutely perfect, the most well-played and the most well-expressed! 3. Nicely played, however I cannot find anything special. It is just well-played, but just bit mainstream, I would say. 4. Fast, which would be okay, but still managed to keep the thema and no blurring. 5. Srsly precise, but not Chopin style. However, I am not conservative about Chopin, so I like this interpretation. Dynamically it was absolutely brilliant. 6. Musically too blurred, but technically just magnificent!!! The best ending, noone could play the last 5 bars like him. Just bit less blurred, and would be perfect! Passionate and therefore dynamically the most tremendous interpretation. 7. Most precisely played, well-expressed every note and stretto so "sober" and nicely played! I can say nothing against, The last 2 octaves were best played of all pianists. However, the middle part could be more individual and original. 8. Beautiful and emotional, just bit too unstable. Notes were almost clear, the stretto part felt firstly, that it got out of control, but then she again cooled her head, and finished it absolutely brilliantly. Her last few bars and the total end is 3rd best after Cziffra and Berezovsky. But the rest of the etude lacks originality, the originality was bit expressed within the dynamics. My favourite - Beginning - Bunin 05 Middle part - Berezovsky 02 Stretto part - Cziffra (especially the last 5 bars) Last three bars as a tremendous detail - Cziffra RULES THE WORLD with his three last bars, then Nakamura and Fracois 03 Whole etude - Berezovsky or Bunin

I'll go out on a limb here, and I'm clearly in the minority, but I honestly like Ashkenazy's version the best. Some of the others, especially Cziffra's while technically, dazzlingly, brilliantly UNBELIEVABLE, just seem less musical, in my humble opinion. Just too too fast. I get that this is an Étude, but still..... I often wonder what the composers' opinions would be, in situations like this, were they able to hear modern pianists play their works. Love all the different interpretations!!! :)

Agreed. There is no room for breathing emotion into the passages which creates and additional layer of energy which is lacking in a performance that is too fast. Worth remembering that Chopin's Pleyel never afforded the type of break-neck speeds we are hearing here. This is why Zimmerman is so good. He can play fast but recognises that that is but one facet of creating good music.
