This is my favourite You Tube channel. It’s beginning to dawn on me that my last few years trying to learn piano hasn’t been full of study or practice - a better description would be piano related activities! I’m on a mission to change that.

Your advice is spot-on and super-useful. Thank you SO much for taking the time to share your strategies. I always thought I couldn’t memorize music (more than 40 years of playing) and you have made it seem absolutely attainable-makes total sense. I hope you continue to make your videos.

Split your practice into two sessions everyday. First session the "warmup" or technique session slow and focused practice on mechanics of keyboard. Take a break like lunch or gym but a good break. Then the second session of the day the focus is all about playing music, improvising, learning tunes, this session is all about playing music. On days with less time available reduce length of the first session. Second session could last the rest of the day if you have the time. Second session could contain music related topics like composition, serious listening, theory study.

Thanks for sharing. May I ask how you work on technique independent of the music you are learning?
@DojoOfCool

In general technique is slow focused practice so both the body and mind are learning how you want to think and play in performance mode. Technique practice maybe be exercises or sections of music being worked on. It's all about what your focus and what you paying attention to programming your mind and body. The the playing music section of practice is focusing on the playing, improv, being creative. This is where you're trusting things you did in technique practice sessions to automatically come through so you can just focus on the outcome.

Please, do you recommend practicing sight reading ? My level is between beginner and advanced. Thank you for your reply
@Pianoologist
@Pianoologist 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for asking, Christopher. I highly recommend reading for comprehension... not merely to "phonetically" crank out dots on a page. In other words, studying of music theory such that you go beyond what each musical symbol and pattern IS (a NOUN) to what each musical symbol and pattern DOES (a VERB!)
