From my collection of recordings that I made off the air on VHS cassettes, this was Emmylou's first appearance as a headliner on an ACL program. It was aired as the first set of the first program of Season 7. (The second set featured Rodney Crowell; but, I did not record it.) My notes made at the time indicate that I recorded this in July 1983, which must have been from a rerun of the original program.

In 1982, Austin City Limits launched its 7th season with a new set featuring the Austin skyline backdrop, and a polished opening theme composed by John Mills. The first episode of Season 7 featured Emmylou Harris and the Hot Band, and Rodney Crowell and the Cherry Bombs. Terry Lickona, the producer of Austin City Limits, wanted the opening theme music to sound more polished. So he called John Mills and asked him to record a new opening theme. Season 7 of Austin City Limits in 1982 featured a star-studded lineup of country music's biggest names, including Emmylou Harris, Rodney Crowell, Kris Kristofferson, Jerry Reed, Chet Atkins, Willie Nelson, and Merle Haggard. Other performers included the Bellamy Brothers, John Anderson, Larry Gatlin, Ricky Skaggs, George Strait, Don McLean, Terri Gibbs, and Roy Clark.👍

My imagination couldn’t conceive of someone such as Emmylou. Her voice is so provocative and packaged so well within a true blend of beauty and melody. She has captivated my taste for music 50 plus years now. Emmylou shivers my timbers!

This is the opening sequence of Season 7 of Austin City Limits in 1982. It starts with a shot of the Austin City Limits sign, which is covered in dirt, debris, and birdpoop, and a tree is sticking out of it. We pan down to see two armadillos chasing each other, and two women riding on their horses. Then it shows a man and a woman riding a tandem bike, a dog catching a frisbee up in the air, two people jogging, and the camera panning up to the Austin skyline with trees. The next scene shows Austin City Limits crew members walking down the street. The camera then zooms in on the Texas state capital, people swimming at Barton Springs, a man rollerblading with ladies, and a shot of sailboats as the sun goes down. The next scene shows Austin, Texas at night. There are shots of Colling's Café, Threadgill's, Beans Restaurant & Bar, Rainbow Works, Hut's Hamburgers, Jake's Beer Café, and Liberty Lunch. The camera pans over to show people dancing with colored lights. Next, the camera zooms in on the colored lights, which obscure the people dancing. The Austin City Limits logo appears over a shot of the Austin skyline at night. The logo zooms up, and a preview of that evening's performance is stretched by a rectangle. The rectangle that appears over a shot of the Austin skyline at night was blue on early episodes of Season 7 of Austin City Limits in 1982. On later episodes, the rectangle was changed to yellow.👍

There I was accidentally booked on one of those rock cruises with all of these terrific "Women of Rock." I didn't even realize it was a chartered ship, with venues all around, blocked off from us regular cruisers. One night I was grooving to the band onstage in the lobby, where everyone could go. As I danced on one leg (my broken ankle was in a walking boot) I noticed two women wearing western clothes and hats, dancing right next to me. I looked straight into the eyes of the older, prettier of the two. She looked right back into my eyes and smiled. The song ended and so did the dance. They disappeared. It took me a minute to realize that moment in heaven was with Emmylou Harris.

I am an agnostic/borderline atheist but God, SHE favored you that night. I would pay you money for that smile. When Emmylou came by her ethereal platinum she became like the younger sister of my late wife of 62+ years. Yes, God, SHE was good to me too. 15:53

Met Emmy backstage in Phoenix during Yellow moon tour with Rodney Crowell. Both lovely, gratious people. My mom played Emmy at her small town restaurant in the Chilcotin/ Cariboo country in BC, Canada in the 80's . This lady lured me away from rock to country. Huge fan.

10 years ago I took my wife and my daughter for her graduation from high school to Ireland - a trip we talked about taking for many years. In the little village of Doolin, in a little shop filled with paintings I heard the old familiar songs of EmmyLou Harris. I talked to the painter and shopkeeper about EmmyLou Harris for a good 15 minutes. Amazing how the love of the music could bring two people together in shared admiration though normally separated by 4,000 miles!

Emmylou Harris has been making my heart skip a beat and do a back flip since I was 14 years old. I had a huge epiphany around that time, I became re-acquainted with country music, and it came about because of Emmylou Harris, and Asleep at the Wheel on Austin City Limits. I heard it on a deeper level than when I was little. Those sentiments remain until today. I am eternally grateful to Emmylou for providing not only great music, but for educating me by playing so much of the old stuff and revitalizing it.

Loved dancing with Emmylou back at the old Quiet Knight in Chicago back in the early 80's to Burning Spear reggae band! She was thrilled with the vibe and amazing music from the band and she and I danced a whole heap until the last note! The band played until 2 or 3am! She danced with her hands on her hips, country/reggae style with a huge smile on her face! Best night of my life! :)

Marty Stuart said she had sparks flying off of her during her performance with Gram Parsons and the Eagles back in '73 at MSU, but looking at this, she throws off sparks every time she gets behind that microphone, especially when she summons the spirit of Wanda Jackson in some of these songs..

COMMENT PREVIOUSLY PROVIDED BY CODY M: From Austin City Limits Season 7, Episode 1: Emmylou Harris/Rodney Crowell (1982). This is the first episode where the Austin City Limits set is updated: the horse fences were removed, and the Austin skyline backdrop has been put together. This is the first episode to have a new opening sequence, and the opening theme music by John Mills. This is the first episode where Bill Arhos is credited as the executive producer, and continued in that role until his retirement in Season 24 (1999).
