Bill Evans isn't modern... Bill Evans is timeless.
@pauldeck45009 ай бұрын
A lot of players tried to copy him, but they failed. Others allowed themselves to be inspired, and many of them succeeded. Here's the timeless lesson from Bill's legacy: Play whatever you want, but first of all it has to be the truth -- the real music in your mind's ear, not just what comes easily to your hands, and second, it really helps if it sounds good, in other words, you have to have a "mind's ear" to begin with. And that comes from native talent and listening to a lot of stuff including classical music.

The greatest. No other adjectives. All modern jazz pianists follow in his footsteps.

He complains about the piano, then produces utterly beautiful music from it. Aren't we all a little like that in some ways?
@brileystewart2 жыл бұрын
He probably just had to put more effort than normal to play this way, it can be frustrating to pick up an instrument and not feel as comfortable with it.

I can appreciate Evan's anger with this ill-kept piano. Still, as ever, he's his own constellation. Always has been. Always will be. Thanx pianopod. Thank you v. much.

It is sad that some of the masters of jazz had to play on such horrible pianos at times, and often these recordings still manage to bring out the brilliance of their playing.

The greatest, no doubt. He was supposed to appear at Montmatre Hus in Copenhagen at 10 pm that day. Bought the tickets in advance. Made a long queue. Got into the place. We waited long, until the owner of the place, "Danmarks Kaj", appeared and gave excuses on behalf of Bill. He was in the hotel but did not feel in conditions to perform that night. Evans died a week later.

Sadly, I don’t know what jazz musician’s life didn’t end up being tragic (with the possible exceptions of all 4 members of the MJQ, Benny Goodman, maybe a couple of others).

I also went out to hear Bill briefly before he died and it was explained that he was too ill to perform- I believe Andy LaVerne was subbed in and the owner offered refunds to those who wanted it. It was at Fat Tuesdays in NYC. I remember finding out that he died very soon after that canceled gig- I don't remember now whether it was a week or just a day or two after. Not sure how the timeline jibes with the Montmarte gig of the other commenter, but obviously he was still trying and hoping ( and the promoters ) to make gigs in spite of being extremely ill. Bill had to be one of the most sensitive and beautiful musical artists who ever lived. He is the only instrumentalist who I would listen to for the definitive interpretation of a ballad - even more than a vocalists version. His musical language was beyond words.

Maybe I'll be exaggerate, but sometimes I think no other pianist would have been necessary, after Bill Evans. After hearing him no other give you the same emotions...!!

Although I admire and appreciate the emotional complexity and poignancy Evans is able to express through his music, I think this statement is misguided. If anything, I believe Bill would have wanted to see the continuation of the art of jazz through young musicians.

Anyone else wondering how it could be better than this, on a piano which BE would have had appreciated? I can't figure this out...sublime performance
@thorsteinssonh13 жыл бұрын
I can hear all the subtle qualities of his chords despite the piano being out of tune by his standard. Some of use off course can hear things much deeper and cleaner in the notes of a piano. In contrast, the fathers of jazz piano were too crude to care too much about the exact miniscule tuning of the piano... yet they were great... and yet there is something beautiful about a chord slightly and unpredictably out of tune.

It's not Eddie here, it's Marc Johnson on bass. Both Evans and McFarland died from coke. I do hear that the piano is rather shallow and overly bright. That does make for a difficulty in maintaining one's usual harmonic colors and balance. Out of tune in the upper middle register as well. Music survives all attempts to derail it, of course. MBB
