Wigh Land I hate being grouchy, but... Majestic and solemn!? This sounds like a fair with cheap food and easily-broken prizes at scam stalls. These organs were made to set the mood at carnivals. The only reason you think it sounds elegant is because you’ve only heard this music in movies and TV shows set in a quaint, idealized past.
@BizzarreProductions5 жыл бұрын
NoArmSally I’m not saying that it sounds BAD, just that it’s a “lowbrow” sound vs a highbrow one. Nothing about this instrument is considered high class or refined except through nostalgia goggles. Everybody sitting here talking about the cost to produce a sheet for this organ, but you know what would make that cost look like a joke? The upkeep on this. Imagine: if this organ had been in subpar shape, how much would a restoration cost? For size comparison, look at the nearby doorway. Let's also factor in that that's likely real gold leaf. What about the electrical? Every one of those lights is lighting up 100 years later. Clearly, it has been shown a lot of love in its 100+ years of existence. What is often forgotten in these comments is that these machines were built at a time when all the modern materials we have today didn't even exist. They had yet to be invented. In addition, these organs were not powered electrically, but by manpower. An organ grinder had to turn the wheel. Even to drive the bellows that provide the compressed air to be blown through the organ pipes. A hard job and if he wasn't turning the organ wheel there was no music. Also keep in mind that even in the early 1950's electronic music was still played with 78 rpm records. These could not possibly match the quality of these organs. It was only when the Americans (in 1945) discovered the German tape recorders, which were superior to what was known at the time, that the quality of recording and reproduction techniques began to improve greatly and these machines were gradually replaced at fairgrounds by electronic reproduction via loudspeakers. As a contemporary fairground operator, I naturally use loudspeakers and modern techniques on my fairground attraction. But my grandfather had a Limonaire (French) organ, which an organ grinder had to turn all the time. Even before the war, my grandfather placed an electric motor on the organ. At the outbreak of the war the organ ended up in a barn on a farm. When the war was over, the organ turned out to be completely destroyed, eaten by rats and mice. My grandfather could no longer bring himself to repair the enormous damage, born in 1888, his career was almost over. He then played the mediocre 78 rpm records on his fairground attraction at the end of his career. My uncle, the son of, must have had a Hooghuys (Belgian) organ. Both organ types, Limonaire and Hooghuys, were widely used at fairs in Belgium.

POV: You’re walking through the old abandoned carnival you went to as a child. It’s been many years, and you remember you and your family happily riding the rides and eating carnival food. Your family has passed now, and you feel misery. Suddenly, the old merry-go-round turns on and starts to play its tune. Dancing queen, this used to be your favorite song. You would sing it with your family when it came on. They were great times. You look over to see a sobbing man near the controls. He too remembers this ride. You go over to him and get to talking. He used to own this carnival, but it went out of business due to him losing his job at his other work. He loved this place, but now it’s gone. You and him stare at the merry-go-round in tears, as your nostalgia fades along with the music.
