I started focusing on B major recently instead of C, helped me learn black keys real fast! Cool tip from Chopin if that helps anyone :)
@seancraven9678
@seancraven9678 Жыл бұрын
B Major was the scale I learned straight after C Major and it has given me the opinion that C Major isn't the best scale to master first. It offers a lot of foundational understanding for scales and keys in general but from a dexterity standpoint, it's so flat that when you start playing two octaves hands together, you're having to roll your wrists a lot and shift to keep your playing even. I like B Major and other keys because the up and down nature of the scales as they fall along the piano lends itself to more fluid playing early on- at least for me
@labanlabansson
@labanlabansson 9 ай бұрын
Yes. B-maj and E-maj correlate better with the physiology of the hand. Easier to get fluid or legato.
@DovidM
@DovidM 7 ай бұрын
@@labanlabanssonAgreed. Even if you eventually plan to play a piece in the original key, it’s helpful to practice it in B or E major since this allows you to develop the expected legato feeling. Then when you revert to the original key, you have greater awareness of how the legato passages should sound than if you, say, listened to a recording of someone playing the same piece.

Great advice! I'd add only one very small thing: sing the scales as you play them, even if you're not a singer, even if you think you look and sound stupid. This is CRUCIAL to connect your hand movements to your (inner) voice, and with the habit, it's so good for your mood! Just give it a shot, you'll thank me down the line.

I enjoy all of your videos. I'm an adult learner. I started self teaching a number of years ago, quit when my adult son passed suddenly. I restarted 1.5 years ago. Using my piano practice to heal. I started seeing piano teaching videos but yours are the best. My opinion only, others say they are teaching but actually doing more showing off than teaching. Paid piano lessons isn't possible as I'm retired living on social security. I appreciate your lessons and directing your lessons to actual beginners. Thank you

Just want to let you know, I'm a 63 year old man and always wanted to play the piano. I bought a small keyboard by Casio but it has full size keys years ago and just life kept getting in the way. I now have the time and watched a few of your videos and it got me to get it out and set it all up. I'm practicing now all because of you girl. I would love to have a teacher like you. You make me as new to this feel good about it and when I mess up I don't get frustrated with myself. I hear your voice saying it's OK just keep going. Your bubble energy and sweetness is so good to see and hear. we need more of that in this crazy world. By the way when I get a little better and stick with it I'm going to go get an 88 key piano but it will be a reward to me for staying with it. Thank you for getting me started I'm having so much fun other then when my hands get tired. LOL

Probably the biggest enemy of scales is boredom. I'd suggest the 'netflix technique': put something to watch on your tablet or laptop or screen, and practise scales for the duration. All you have to do is keep going as long as the programme keeps going, rather than fighting your boredom. As an additional benefit, this stops you from wanting to look at your hands while you practise. The major benefit of scales is when they are instinctive and automatic, and this only comes after tonnes of repetition. Likewise arpeggios. Then simple phrases from pieces.

Practicing scales builds what many call muscle memory (which btw is more like a nerve-thing …). But also it helps you becoming and staying confident and fluent in playing the piano as well as memorizing and focussing on the voicing and tone of each single key. Scales may also assist in understanding the fundamental playground of the chords on the scale.

It helps to navigate the keyboard when playing a song in a key signature. Helps to remember the sharps and flat with each scale.

I just turned 75. I’ve been singing in musicals since college, during the Johnson administration. Recently I performed in Young Frankenstein where I had this solo that I knocked out of the park people came up to me after a remarked that they didn’t know I was such a good singer. So right then an there I decided to take action. I signed up for voice lessons to improve my singing voice. The dragged a keyboard out of the closet and vowed to teach myself how to play. After looking at several KZbin sites I found yours. Your smile and simple technique sold me.

I’d love to see tutorials like this but for other scales. There are some ones that have way weirder fingering with the sharps. I’m getting really good at C major since that’s what all the ‘beginner’ tutorials focus on lol

if you practice scales and know the 1,3,5 and sometimes 7 notes of each scale you can play any song in any key especially if you’re playing a song with a vocalist and they’re used to singing a song in a certain key

I use the major scales as my warm ups. I do 8th notes at 120 bpm and make my way through the Circle of Fifths so I di all 12. I alternate whether i do sharps or flats first. I have a goal of learning my relative minor scales and being able to do those the aame way. I have the CoF printed and hung, so the knowledge is there and the muscle memory will make its way. Ive learned a few of the relative minors, but not all of them yet. Progress. I find doing the scales sets me in the mental frame for practicing and the use of the metronome also helps with my evenness in playing. I've despised the metronome for years as I didnt understand why timing was harder for me than others. Recently I was able to figure out why and the resentment has faded to the point that I dont feel the urge to smash the metronome to smithereens anymore. I never did destroy one, but that frustration was very much there. Anyway, I use scales to get in the mindset to practice as well as bring my musical knowledge to the forefront.

Why I want to learn scales? 🤷🏻‍♂️ My wife & I started pastoring a church. She preaches, & I had to learn to play a piano that didn’t have a transpose button. So now, instead of only playing in C, or G, or D, I’ve had to learn all of them, to which makes me happy. After watching this video, I remember my mom teaching me this stuff, not that I paid a whole lot of attention. Even though I am now the church pianist, my playing is somewhat boring. So I’m needing to learn MORE!

Repeating the top or turn round note is something ABRSM candidates will have to unlearn as it is deprecated in their Grade system for scales, arpeggios and broken chords. I know it helps keep the quaver (quarter note) beat but it will be a bad habit to get into for those who want to go on to do their grades.
