Allysia, great video. I’m an accompanist and YES we are under appreciated 😂 When we mess up everyone gives you the look but when you do fine nobody says anything. I accompany an Irish music band and it’s challenging since changes in tempo, adapting the melody, and improv are all prominent and happen in each piece. It’s fun though!

From now on I’ll give the Accompanist as much respect as the Soloist, if not more

My school's accompanist is a boss. The guy has to play about 100 pieces with different students and then he's always at the choir, orchestra, and opera rehearsals. I don't know how he keeps his sanity.

As a half time flutist I so appreciate accompanists and I'm awe of the skill level it takes to be one. THANK YOU to all pianists that take on this bada** endeavor. Also, does anybody have experience being a dancer accompanist?

There was one time I was accompanying a choir at a competition and I got the music less than a week before. It stunk! I'm also an organist, so I've walked into church and they say "Oh, you need to scrap your music and play this instead." Accompanying is an art of its own folks.

At least as an accompanist you’re often the only one on stage getting paid!

Perfect timing! I'll be doing my first bit of accompanist work on Monday. The sound delay will probably throw me off, but maybe I'll fair better if I'm expecting it. Thanks for the info!

When you learn more from this ten minute video than you do from 4 semesters of accompaniment-based Piano Ensemble in college...

Oh wow I was just thinking about this and daydreaming about someday accompanying for my church and for choir pieces! Could you maybe talk about classical vocal piece accompaniment? I remember the kid who accompanied J'endtend le Moulin got a roar 3x louder than the choir.

I’ve seen your other videos you seem pretty good. How long have you been this for? I think the hardest part about playing with someone else is keeping up with the tempo. I like keeping a steady tempo. But sometimes I start to speed up to give some more motion to the song or that’s not good if you for two ppl playing. or even slowdown in dissonant chords or high notes. But it helps if you practice with a metronome first

papikabron18 I wouldn’t preclude any opportunity for musical interpretation such as the tempo changes/rubato you describe. As an adult who was once a bando in high school and college (piano student now) I can attest that bandos learn how to adapt and play with others probably better than the average piano student because we are trained to listen across the ensemble, make our sound “fit” with the group and work with each other through various phrases and tempo changes usually by means of a director but manage ourselves in small groups with body gestures and sharp inhalation of breath to signify changes. The key is communicating and rehearsing ahead of time.

Hi Allysia. What do you think the minimum piano level or grade should I have if I want to be an accompanist for RCM or ABRSM exam of other instruments (like violin or flute)?

well im going to be accompanying some of my music schools beginner violin students and violin teachers students in recitals and tests and im going into the CM 10 / Advanced (last) test... im also advanced in violin (i would be taking ABRSM 9) so that might give me an advantage in terms of accompanying the violinists because ill usually have learnt or heard their pieces before. Id say itd really depend on your skill level and previous experience (such as accompanying at your church or teaching the instrument youll be accompanying) and of course you probably wont be accompanying any advanced testers

How do you become an accompanist? Do they have their sheet music to follow or mostly play chords by ear?
