I'm new to this and find that the metronome distracts me. Very helpful advice, thank you! I do have a question. How do you determine the tempo of a song? Like the specific beats per minute, if that makes sense.

I like the idea of using a metronome, considering that I do tend to get crazy and go beyond, and it's just like, slow down! So I think that this is a great use when it comes to rhythm and beats. I want a metronome, but I know that there are some online ones as well (my cousin had the app for like 3 years already). But can you make a video explaining how to focus more on the piano than on how much you worry about like, how many people in the house who might be listening to you, and how not to dislike/get bored of the piano, I have an issue where I can't seem to focus when people are around, either listening, just there, or talking. I just don't like the noise, because I just want to focus on the piano and how I'm doing.

“ once you can give the metronome the respect that it deserves” ( kind of sounds like Bender of Futurama). I’m guessing that the “how “is slow and incremental surrender to the metronome sound.

I've started a piece with a 6/4 time signature and recommended tempo of dotted half-note = 44-48. Since most of the notes are quarter notes would it be okay to change the metronome setting to about 132-144 and play it that way? or is this bad practice? (If my math is correct it should be the same)

I say go for it! I do things like that sometimes too. It's near impossible following a metronome beat of 44!

I don't have problems with a metronome when the beat and the piece match up (all whole notes). How do you handle the 1/4 and 1/8 notes? Switching back and forth between those types of notes is what gets me messed up. (I'm 57 and have been learning for about 6 months now...almost through Alfred's Adult All-in-One book)

Usually I set the metronome to a quarter-note beat - that's my default. So playing quarter notes, half notes and whole notes are relatively simple. Quarter notes are always played at each and every "tick", half notes every two "ticks", and so on. Where it gets complicated is with 8th notes, which is what I think you're meaning - the notes that don't align with a metronome tick. One thing you could do is google 8th note patterns on image search - I would focus on trying to figure out very short, 1-2 bar patterns with a blend of 8th notes and quarter notes, tapping the beat while the metronome ticks. It's easier to figure out rhythms separate from note reading, since note reading is just another layer of challenge. I get my students to clap an 8th note beat to a quarter-note metronome (two claps per tick) just to get a feel for it - it's something we'll do at many lessons, and can take a bit of time before it feels natural. Keep at it!

Thanks! I thought about doing that at one point, but thought it would be confusing for the whole notes. I will definitely give it a try though and see if it helps. I was surprised last night when I set the metronome and wasn't staying in time just doing Hanon 1. We just think we have more rhythm than we do, I guess. :-)

Most times I'll listen to the RCM digital recording of the song I'm about to start and get the 'feel' for the rhythm in this way. However, recently I've reviewed the technical requirements for Prep A and noticed the need to play broken C major chords as triplets at 60 BPM so I've been using my metronome more.

This is a good way to do it! When I'm teaching a new piece to students, a lot of the time I'll play it for them (or send them home to listen) because of how much it helps the learning process.

"Give it the respect it deserves." I have a hard time internalizing that beat. Apparently it's obvious to my teacher. In a recent lesson, he started to express the beat in an exaggerared movement, sort of like a living conductor's baton...with supplemental sound effects. But once he stopped, and I looked inside myself, I kind of still didn't feel it. It's a bit frustrating since I've known for quite awhile that is goal but still seems off in the distance. It's just not in there unless I'm consciously inserting the beat which then is a mental load and slows things down. Hmmmmph, so maybe I'm still not giving it its due respect.
