I was a young boy studying piano and every time Magaloff came to Genova I went to his concerts. I had the pleasure to have the permission of my parents to go listen to the afternoon trials. Wonderful his complete opera of Chopin; He also played the two piano concerts of Liszt, "la campanella" one of the bis....perfect... To the present days for me he performs Chopin in the way I like the most !

Puro spirito Chopeniano nelle Tue mani, Maestro.

This is fascinating playing. (Excuse the humor - we need more of it - but I'll bet people argued over the virtues of this playing in its day the way we do nowadays about Streisand or cilantro). I can hear many pianists fault its too-often fragmentation and lack of long line idea but the sound is so stirring that I can't help but love it. His love and playing of the G flat, a much neglected work I think, is exemplary, not one ounce of "show off" and in the B sections of both that and the op. posth the short but frequently appearing alto counter melodies do open the ears to new things. Very interesting, but maybe not so effective for me, is the Largo bridge of the op posth that maintains the LH as eighths rather than establishing sextuplets if played in cut time (and it's not cut time in the Paderewski edition I have) so those two measures seem to have their own exclusive tempo. Hopefully these comments are balanced and discerning. Full of interesting questions this playing and I'll certainly come back and listen to more of him. Thanks for offering it up pianushko.

@@dusanss39 We are not talking here about Schubert's magnificent Impromptus, but instead about great recordings of Chopin's, of which this set of recordings my Magalov in my view is unsurpassed..

It's hard to know how this playing could be bettered. If you are ever in your life able to become familiar with music and playing like this you will see the depth of expression shown in weight, timing, and phrasing of notes. There is little enough extreme speed to add to the meaning of passages that can be understood (and not just a blur of virtuoso). Piano is becoming a circus act - driven by circus audiences no doubt.

Beautiful performances. Since you've got nothing for us to look at, it would have nice if you'd given us the score.
