‘I play with violence,’ Astor Piazzolla (1921-1992) told one interviewer. ‘My bandoneon must sing and scream - I can’t conceive of pastel tones in tango.’ With an unrivalled discography of minimalist classics to his credit, from Satie to Glass to Yann Tiersen, Jeroen van Veen is ideally placed to return the raw passion and punchy rhythms that belong to the music of Piazzolla in any context.
Jeroen Van Veen’s selection runs the gamut of Piazzolla’s expressive vocabulary, from the tenderly intimate title track and the Impressionist brushstrokes of Oblivion to the tough and defiant Libertango which concludes the album in truly anthemic fashion. CD2 begins with another masterpiece of street music, Adios Nonino. A string of other masterpieces follow, making their effect as surely on the piano as they do on the guitar or Piazzolla’s own instrument, the bandoneon. There is the simple, sweet sentiment of Ausencias, the flamboyant Street Tango and a collection of six contrasting tangos from 1974, from the dark and swirling Meditango to the grave resignation of Tristango.
Marking the centenary of Piazzolla’s birth in 1921, this new album pays devoted homage to a composer who came to craft one of the defining sounds of the late 20th-century, when tango left the barrios and clubs of Buenos Aires and then the dance clubs of America and Europe to find a home in recital and concert halls worldwide.
As ‘the leading exponent of minimalism today’ (Fanfare), Jeroen Van Veen’s playing will speak to an audience which has never danced a tango in its life but thrills to the undertow of melancholy and dazzling flair that characterises great tango interpreters past and present. ‘From the first time I heard his music, I felt attracted to it,’ says the pianist in his booklet essay. ‘The rhythm, the melodic value, the atmosphere, it is hard to describe but it felt like a natural attraction. The kind of feeling that the music is part of your music memory; it was already there.’

Piazzolla was not loved in Argentina while he was alive. We are so nostalgius and this "wasn't tango". Now I think he is in peace with Troilo and other friends

Sorry, but this is not true. He was resisted by a minority of tango traditionalists, especially at the beginning of his career, but he was deeply loved by many others. Troilo, for one, loved his music, and they even recorded together. Piazzolla concerts were massive events in Buenos Aires. He was certainly loved by most Argentinians and was already considered to embody the music of Buenos Aires while still alive.

@@gonzatamame También hay discos de Piazzolla en Italia, Francia o Japón, pero lo importante es que hay muchísimos en Argentina, donde nunca dejaron de salir discos de él. No te lo tomes personalmente, no es un comentario contra vos, pero lo que estás diciendo no es verdad. Los conciertos que daba Piazzolla en los 80 en Buenos Aires, Córdoba y otros lugares del país se llenaban, miles de personas iban a escucharlo. Lo sé porque estuve en algunos de ellos, llevado por mi viejo que lo amaba aún cuando no tenía ninguna formación musical y era también amante de Troilo y de Gardel. ¿Piazzolla tuvo resistencias? Sí, por supuesto. Pero también fue idolatrado en vida en Argentina.

Piazzola's music ranges from somber to pensive to turbulent. I haven't heard anything I would call joyful, but I can play his music while I'm focusing on detailed work.

Tango is never joyful and it never can be. The basic element of this music is showing the tension of having opposite feelings, showing the changing of different moods, sometimes subtly, sometimes violently. Apart from that, these moods you can hear come from Astor Piazzolla's personality. This music never ceases to intrigue, fascinate and amaze me. It never becomes schematic or boring, anything can happen in it. Lovely!

He tenido la inmensa fortuna de interpretar varios de estos temas en un "Tributo a Astor Piazzolla" en el Teatro Memorial para América latina (Sao Paulo Brasil ) en 1992) junto a Antonio Agri, Daniel Binelli, Hugo Romero y Guillermo Ferrer He tenido la fortuna que al mismo Astor le gustara mi música.. y me impulsara a dedicarme a componer.. Demás está decir que fue un honor interpretarlas junto a dos músicos que tocaron con Astor: Antonio Agri durante muchos años..como violinista..."EL " violinista de Piazzolla y el gran bandoneonista Daniel Binelli quien lo fuera junto a Piazzolla en su último Sexteto. Valoro la intención de interpretar estas obras..en piano solo, pero cabría aclarar que no se trata de "arreglos"..sino de meras "transcripciones" para piano solo algo que en muchos casos no alcanza a reflejar obras que nacieron para quinteto ... La versión de "Resurrección del ángel" ..carece de movimiento tanguero es de una lentitud aburrida y anodina.. La hermosa (cuasi cadenza) donde en el quinteto era interpretada por un gran pianista argentino (Dante Amicarelli ) tiene todo dinamismo, fuerza, ternura , melancolía y tango TANGO...!! Mi propia interpretación del solo de piano de "Resurrección del angel" (que fue grabada en vivo en el Concierto Tributo a Astor Piazzolla) 1992 es la expresión profunda y muestra con absoluta belleza de qué estoy hablando. Insisto, rescato la intención de grabar estas obras..pero debo confesar que carecen de algo muy particular e indefinible con palabras... sabor, vuelo, mugre, tango, Buenos Aires, Argentina..inmigración, tristezas, duelos tragedias,sinsabores, alma porteña.. La trivialidad de decir que Oblivión tiene pinceladas impresionistas ya colmó mi paciencia, en todo caso es una balada postromántica. Argentina se debate en una crisis enorme hace muchos años.. y en muchas cuestiones.. no voy a hablar de política..aquí..pero defiendo nuestra música.. la mía propia y la de un gigante como Piazzolla.. Estoy seguro (y no lo digo por mí).. que muchos "pianistas hombres o mujeres" argentinos pueden lograr versiones mucho más profundas , bellas y rescatando la verdadera esencia de la música de Piazzolla.

Soy fan del sr. Van Veen. Estos arreglos suyos son muy transparentes y limpios, quizá demasiado limpios. Echo en falta un poco del sabor del tango porteño. Saludos y feliz año!
