This piece explores our relationship with our image through social media’s lens. The filter culture.
I recently watched Netflix’s film ‘The Social Dilemma’ and was shocked to find how close it was to my truth, I recognised so much in myself and so did my peer group, in fact every person on my social media was sharing/talking about it. Irony right there.
We spend a HUGE amount of time looking at our face. On average, age 26 and under, spend 2 hours and 30 minutes EVERY SINGLE DAY on their social media. Thats six years and 8 months of their life. Sharing selfies, stories, videos OR looking at other peoples selfies, stories, videos. Either way, more and more are we scrutinising our appearances, comparing and picking apart our ‘not so perfect life’. And then… there’s filters; Perfect Face, Plastics, Beautiful Face, Holy Bucks are just a few of Instagram’s face filters.
Selfie Dysmorphia is a term used for people requesting procedures to resemble their digital image. Its becoming more and more common and trust me when I say, I’ve gone down the rabbit hole of comparing my face with others; looking at the way one cheek bone sits differently, does my nose fit my lips. CRAZY!
