On a fine clear winters morning, we see Loco NM 25 enveloped in steam as she assembles the carriages for the Afghan Express at the Port Augusta Rail-yards. She is to go to Wool-Shed Flat, meet up with the Loco W 22, Justin Hancock, Pichi Richi Explorer, and combined, continue on to Quorn as a Double Header Steam Train. The Pichi Richi Double Header steam trains are fast becoming a very popular event on the steam calendar, as shown by the number of cars following the train. This cavalcade following the train forms part of what makes this event special, along with the obvious enjoyment had by those on the train, even to those running the loco’s, and carriage guards, all play their part. As a side note, upon reaching Quorn, and soon after all passengers had vacated the carriages, I could see that every carriage was being cleaned and swept out by volunteers in preparation for the run back to Port Augusta. On my way back home, I noticed continuing track maintenance under way at Wool-Shed Flat, replacing degraded sleepers. This work still under way, must have taken a break when the double met up, and would need to completed in time for the Afghan Express to make her return journey back to Port Augusta that day.
