Pile 3 - thank you. Such a painful ending- because he didn’t clarify this & instead stayed ambiguous, & gave confusing answers & responses- & he did this after I finally opened up intimacy. Immediately the next day he tells me he doesn’t have time & some other bullshit & that he wanted to give all his attention to another person. This was just awful, awful. Horrible way to treat someone. & my heart goes out to all others in situations receiving this pile. Very sad. & hurtful.

3... I wasn't asking too many things. He got carried away and swept me along. The whole time I tried staying grounded and he stressed HIMSELF out. All I asked for was honesty and a consistent pattern (1x a week or 1x every 2 weeke meet up). We had one argument and he couldn't handle it.

Pile 2. The way I devastated his fragile ego was not any kind of attack. I had to cancel our last two visits. We live in different states. I visit him every couple of months during a business trip. I had to cancel the first time because my brother tested positive for COVID and I had just seen him the day before he tested positive. The second time, I hurt my back and couldn’t travel. I guess he took it personally.

Pile 3 resonates so much, thank you so much for your honesty and your advice ❤️ I have explained to him why this connection is so heavy for me, what I'm working through and why his behavior is so triggering for me. I told him that the way things are, the fact that he wants me close but not too close, makes me distrust him. Ultimately, it makes me want to pull away from him. He has been open about being scared of loneliness, which I think is why he keeps pursuing connections. But at the same time he admits that true commitment terrifies him. He is afraid that he will lose his freedom and he is scared of never fully being accepted for who he is. Overall I think that he's still very unsure about what he wants, making it impossible to meet anyone's needs or expectations. After that conversation I took a few weeks for myself. Our connection was very intense for almost two years and honestly, I think he needed the break as much as I did. We had some contact after that, but it was clear that I wasn't settling for how things had been before. What ultimately changed things for me is that I was willing to be honest and vulnerable with him and he acknowledged that he consciously kept what he thought and felt to himself (and would continue to due so to avoid getting hurt). That wasn't working for me. Either we were going to be completely honest, or I was letting go. Things quickly fizzled out after that without another word. Everything was fine, nothing dramatic happened, no arguments. It was just gone. It was confusing at first, but I let it be. No matter how connected I still feel to him on a soul level (and I do believe he feels that too), that doesn't change the fact that this is who he is at this point in his life and that he has very little to offer me at this time.

A toxic person hurts, manipulates, and although you can understand why he behaves like this, no one is able to put up with a person who intoxicates you for too long.
