My mate was at a Ford garage and parked outside was a bright pink ranger. When he got inside he saw a lady talking to a member of staff complaining about the ride quality and handing off her pickup. When she asked what can be done about it the staff member said “try putting a tonne of bricks in the back”. Legend!! People forget that as great and as fancy as they are inside, they’re still a work vehicle

A lot depends on the tyres as well - people slap all-terrain tyres on a pickup they only ever use on the road then wonder why the ride and handling are compromised...

Depends on use really - for a workhorse it is hard to beat the Hilux but if you have mixed use and spending a lot of time on the road as well as other duties even with the latest Hilux I'd much rather be in a Navara or Amrok. The latest gen D-Max aren't bad trucks either though personally find them a bit slow and underpowered feeling. That said the 19/20 plate Navaras, some Isuzus of a similar year have some big, unsolved, DPF issues currently, some of the Fords have hideous reliability problems. No idea what the latest shared Ford/VW platform is like.

@@Rroff2Ford don’t share a platform with Vw for pick-up or others. Ford vehicles are designed and built by them alone and they simply rebadge the Rangers that they build as Vw Amarok with very minor cosmetic and body changes at their S Africa plant. Ford doing the same with the Transit range that becoming Vw vans 2015. The pay back is Vw sharing its EV battery chassis platform with Ford Europe BUT Ford will from that component, engineer and build all their own EV’s unlike Vw taking Ford’s built by Ford being badged to Vw.

I’ve had 4 L200s in a row and they have been the best pick up. Not restricted to 60mph on motorways due to weight, the best 4wd system out of all pick ups. Come on man ! I think you need to do a video on the last three L200 models as a follow up to your comment / wave good bye to the manufacturer in the UK ! He’s completely wrong about the L200. They’re better to drive and manoeuvre than the 3.2 Ranger I had and the 15-19 2.4 178bhp isn’t much slower either. I test drove the Amarok before buying the Ranger new and it just didn’t do it for me. The Ranger turned into a rust bucket also and the build quality was awful. Fords used to be my go to but they just suck these days I’d have another L200 if they still sold them in the U.K. although the newer shape was only 150bhp.

What mainstream pickup actually has a full time 4wd system in the UK (other than that option within the Mitsubishi super select system and VW’s Amarok Automatic)? To my knowledge all others have 2wd or 4wd with (effectively) locked centre diff which cannot be used on hard dry surfaces. The Mitsubishi super select (or VW Amorok Auto) systems are far better in real world UK conditions (especially in the countryside) where you are on hard roads but with frequent wet and slippery/ leafy /icy conditions between dry stretches. Handling and risk of rear wheel spin are both much improved.

Given the piddly size of the beds on crew cab pickups in the UK, a Japanese kei-class truck, such as a Suzuki Carry, Subaru Sambar or a Daihatsu Hijet, is also a decent option if you're actually going to use a pickup track as an actual pickup truck.

The chassis sadly is a big issue with the D40 Navara - and pretty much any of them are on borrowed time unless treated from day one properly and even then the flexing issue can be a problem - dunno what the situation is with reinforcing plates and whether they are worth doing. If it wasn't for that though the D40 Outlaw would be my go to truck every time, perfect amount of engine power, nice interior, decent handling and ride isn't terrible. As long as you have the turbo intercooler replaced as it tends to leak at around 100K miles you shouldn't have any major problems. But yeah those chassis issues... :(

I have pretty much driven every pickup on the the market in the last 25 years and the last three I have owned have been Ssanyoung’s and I think the are pretty much the best value for money out there. Plus they love an EGR valve as well. We look after a fleet of Hi Lux(es?) for a Vet college and they get an absolute beating. Rarely go wrong as stated but they've 3 with faulty fuel gauges and a couple with replacement instrument clusters which is apparently common as well.

On my second pick up, the big blue wheel barrow pays for itself. The ride is a bit bouncy compared with a car, but a couple hundred kilos covers it, but what it does for me out weighs itself. It goes in the tip, gets fire wood, collects ton bags of garden back fill, moves things and deals with all weather. Not that luxurious and I’d challenge buying one these days for £50k over a decent German estate.

I’d be very diligent in researching what engines are in some of these vehicles and the longevity of them. Ford use wet rubber timing belts 🤔 on their 2.0 diesel engines and VW use wet rubber belts to drive the oil pump on some 2.0 TDI engines. Questionable at the very least and often catastrophic if they fail, which they do. Toyota D4D 2.4 or 2.8 have timing chains which is potentially gonna last longer if regularly serviced

Wouldn't have a Navara given to me - everyone I know who has one moans about reliability and the same can be said for Ford. They are a bit cheap inside, but very reliable in 2.4 guise and they are very good value for money. Paid £20k for my 2 year old Warrior (Barbarian isn't worth the extra) with 10k miles no VAT. Amarok is a decent truck, but Hilux is the daddy, despite the lack of centre differential. They all rust to an extent so need decent underseal.

Nissan nearly had it with the D40 Navara Outlaw (facelift version) - if it wasn't for the chassis rot issue and the turbo intercooler leaking at around 100K miles. I dunno why they didn't just re-release it with the chassis fixed, better quality intercooler and upgraded rear suspension - it would be the perfect pickup for the UK market.

Speaking about import, a long time ago in the US we (a bunch of students on internship) had Ford 150 as local transport on the farm very, very old. We didn't change the oil in it for more than 3 years expecting that it would drop dead and we would get something better. It didn't, only 4 cylinders were working out of 8 but it kept running. Anyhow I enjoy your ranking videos and have an idea (request) for the next one. Long rides. Imagine you (as a small business owner or a family guy on a family vacation) need to drive across all German autobahns for more than 1000 miles one-way and your endpoint is several miles off the tarmac (forest, beach, farm whatever) So you need a comfortable ride, with reasonable cost per mile (maintenance and fuel). From your previous videos guess the Volvo XC70 would be on the list what else?

Love your videos Matt, and it was great to hear your opinion on these. Personally I'd say the older shape Navara D40, later ones at least, are a really great truck and particularly in Outlaw spec with the V6 engine. I also enjoy driving the later (2016 onwards) Ford Rangers, they can be a very easy, pleasant driving experience in Limited or Wildtrak spec, although I'd recommend the auto over the manual.

nissan tech here, those later [D23] navaras are dross, you cannot keep them out of the dealerships, regens + oil changes every 3/4 months, £300 , melted engines due to water loss, £11k, adblue faults causing engine shutdown, £200 - £1600, DPF failures, £3k, power steering failures, £400 etc etc. there was a good reason why nissan pulled the plug a few years back , the warranty work + multiple recalls were killing them. it had a french FWD van engine forced to fit in RWD format, so you have to take the complete body off to change the fuel pump, hell, you even have to take half the front bumper off to get at the oil filter... so... NO...

@@ln5747 No... , but when fitted into navara, it all went wrong, then they fitted twin turbos, and it went wronger water loss is due to ac pump too close to bottom hose, also egr cooler melts. everybody just ignores warning lamps [cos they are that used to them] + keeps driving till they stop can u remember the VW emissions scandal ? well, nissan [renault] might of had to change their software quickly for navaras, which might of caused a few issues... on your master, change your oil regularly [6-9k], + check small coolant hoses behind cooling fan for chafing, + steel pipe behind waterpump for corrosion/leaks. good for 250k if well looked after... gearbox is your weakest link, make sure level is always at max, change every 3yrs

South Africa is bakkie (truck) country, its the best selling vehicles month in and month out for Ford & Toyota in South Africa. You mention alot that its a trade/work vehicle, which it is of course, but here we buy it as family vehicles, its almost a status thing. The top specs VW, Nissan, Toyota (Fortuner & Land Cruiser) and Ford (Everest)are car like driving and as luxurious. Dont know if its the same mindset in the UK as well.

I don't necessarily agree with you on re the Dodge Ram down sides. The older ones are very easy to maintain and work on and parts are much easier than most euro spec cars to get via places like Rock Autos. They also have a much more practical size load bed and 360 hp in the case of my 2004 Rumble Bee .I have owned for 15 years , it is totally reliable and still earns its keep on our farm and as such will never part with it.

Great idea for a video, vehicles which most of us aren't really familiar with, although here in Western Australia they are extremely popular with everyone, the Ford Ranger especially is one of the best selling cars around. Another popular brand new is GWM the Chinese brand. I recently bought a Chery Omoda5 EX which is another Chinese brand which I think are launching in the UK now, maybe a video with your thoughts on Chinese cars would be interesting, (MG, GWM, HAVAL, etc ) you mentioned the GWM Steed which is a model I don't think we get here, I've never heard or seen one. Another idea might be for a video on mini/medium SUV options which seem to be the main choice when looking for a new car and is obviously the most crowded segment.

Wait and see how many more hit the used market next month onwards !!! I believe that the company car tax payment changes in July for pick up trucks that have back seats in and a covered load area ... the raptor is going to be almost £600 per month if you pay tax @ 20%

I agree pick ups should only be used for agriculture, and that's why we have the transit for builders personally pick up trucks should be taxed high as there a nuisance in car parks too so yeh no need for them in my opinion....

A lot of these look rugged and practical but where I live seem to be driven by cretins who seem to have an attitude as soon as they get behind the wheel, can't park properly, and drive through gaps at you that you had right of way in the first place. Would be Hilux though if I needed one.

I'd go for a Hilux or a Ranger.. The V6 Amarok goes like a train, but maintenance costs can be high, and the 2 liter biturbo were plagued with boost issues (at least here in South America where they are also built). I would love to go over the budget a bit to get a V6 Mercedes X-Class, just for the unicorn thing and the live piece of car industry trivia 😆
@Rroff2
@Rroff2 6 ай бұрын
Aside from the interior often looking a bit tacky the V6 X-Class is actually an excellent pickup combining the better bits of the D23 Navara with a much better engine for pickup duties. I've often considered it as a replacement for my Navara Outlaw which most pickups in the UK are a step down from :(

Heard a story about the Hilux - the Taliban stole some of them that were donated by Canada and they were so tough and reliable that they thought the Canadian maple leaf was some kind of Western symbol for toughness or something. As for the Fiat Fullback - if the tray is empty does that mean it's a... bareback? That sounds much more interesting down at the pub.
