Pick-Up & Unboxing: Children’s Python

In February of 2019 I won a voucher from Riley’s Reptiles. In March 2020 I traded the voucher in for a baby Antaresia childreni (Children’s Python), a species of python native to Australia that is the second smallest python species in the world. On April 1, 2020 I made the trip to our FedEx ship center to pick him up and bring him home. Macel” was hatched on July 9, 2019, produced by Riley Jimison.

I too am a fan of cereal boxes, cracker boxes, paper towel tubes and wrapping paper tubes for snake hides. PVC pipe too. For small and young snakes, whether colubrid or boid, the paper towel tube is probably the fan favorite. BTW, I have a 2-year-old childreni male that thinks everything is food, and I have started your target training technique. Already I am seeing some positive results, though we are not out of the woods yet. His sister on the other hand is amazingly well-behaved. She is a gem, the perfect pet snake.

They are lovely little snakes and l always say, no hassle, great little feeders, UGH once they get going and very hardy little snakes too.

Awesome little creature. I got a voucher for Riley's reptiles in the 2018 Southwest Carpetfest Auction, which I used to acquire a Brazilian Rainbow Boa. I also got a voucher for Riley from the 2020 Southeast Carpetfest auction, which I'm hoping to use to get one of his Axanthic Tiger Coastal Carpets. Thank you for sharing.

Hi Lori, I hope you see this. I love your channel and your entire attitude toward animals. I'm hoping you can help me out. I purchased a Childrens Python at NARBC, the breeder said she was approximately two months and eating pinky mice. I would like to preface this with the fact that I have four Ball Pythons and two Hognose which I have no problems feeding. The Childrens Python seems completely disinterested in food. I have not had her long but her reaction to the feeder has me concerned. She is very docile and doesn't strike or hiss. She tries to get out of the tank and climb on to me when I open her enclosure. I have not been handling her I'm letting her get settled in and eat. When do I know this is a concern? Any tips on feeding them. I have never heard anyone talk about having trouble getting this species to eat.

Margie Walker This species is said by breeders to be difficult to get started eating but typically once they’re establish esters, they’re good eaters from then on. If your snake wasn’t a well established feeders with several successful meals taken before she was sold to you, then then issues you’re having now aren’t a surprise. Have you contacted the breeder about this? That is always the best first step. You can try seeing if she will eat while out exploring, sometimes allowing them to makes one choices about where and when they do things helps. I had two baby bredli that wouldn’t eat in their quarantine tubs but would readily eat if I took the kids off and allowed them to come out. It’s just one idea. You can try scenting the rodents with other things like lizard, bird, chicks, or frog scent, etc.
