This lock still kicks my butt when it comes to single pin picking. I can rake it in about 3 seconds (hundreds of times). I can dirty rake it with a pick by just starting with the pick resting against the back side of pin 4, and then a single swipe out with firm upward pressure and it's open by the time I get to pin 2.. But when I try to single pin pick it, pin 4 is always binding *hard* and it just scrapes along slipping and sticking and never giving me a clean click, or I get multiple clicks every time it stops. I really don't understand why it's so hard. It is well lubricated.

Your situation is not unfamiliar! Two things to try: Try applying torque/tension in the opposite direction, it can really change everything including binding order. #3's will open in either direction. But mostly, try a different #3. Buy a new one. I've read that cheaply manufactured locks can sometimes, just sometimes, be nearly as hard to SPP as good locks, and it will vary from lock to lock even among the same model because of the sort of sloppy manufacturing process. On the whole, lower end Master locks are easy to SPP, but every once in a while you get a dog. I've got two #3's right now myself; one I can openly consistently within single digit seconds (and no vice), and the binding order is clear; the other one I have is like yours; I can rake it open but SPP never works, the first key pin easily oversets and sticks even though it's a high cut, and then another pin sounds like it keeps releasing after being set. It's the only lock I own that I've never been able to SPP, so far. A friend of mine has the same situation with a pair of #3's, one easy, one difficult (though I did manage to spp open that one). I can only guess, but I suspect the bores for the chambers in these problem locks have a milling issue where maybe one bore is deformed and some pins won't stay set while maybe others catch on burrs while you work on the other pins, but I just don't know. I'm tempted to take a cutting disc to the thing just to see what's causing so much difficulty. Anyway, don't let it dissuade you, get another lock and have a go at it. Also, if you can see the keys in the package before you buy, get one without too crazy of a bitting until your ready for that kind of challenge.

You're correct. Poor tolerances. Those are a beginners lock for a reason. Cheers!

Yes, beginner locks, but rare items here in Germany.

I've noticed on KZbin and Reddit, that the good pickers and black belts don't feel the need to make Master Lock jokes.

Haha - yeah, not much to expect from locks of this kind.

Ahhhh.... Good old #3's. It's really sad how easy they are to open (even with a good bitting).

Yeah, bad tolerances and manufacturing mistakes are a bad combination.

Ahh! The infamous Master Lock Nr. 3. They can be opened with a paperclip, because they are made so cheaply. Thanks for the analysis. Can you cut it open, please, so that we can see how they manage to make them so badly?

It's not my lock - cannot cut it open.

Cute lock,well analysed. I think the only difficult thing about master locks is finding a master lock joke that has not been made yet. Do they sell the same models in germany?

Almost as bad as a TSA lock.
@RWBHere3 жыл бұрын
The difference is that TSA locks are not intended to be secure.

Yeah, guess TSA and master hold the record of insecure padlocks.
