Thanks brother. What did you use for your shim. The one I made was what gave me more consistent sidebar compression. I would definitely recommend giving it a go. If you don't have one to mod, you can get them off Amazon. I've seen you pick, you can get this brother. Practice with the housing off, the thing that holds the core in the door, that says kwikset on it. (Can't think of the real name for it at this second) but that was a big help too. Take care my friend 🤜🤛

Thank you kindly. I hope this proves useful for you. I was trying to find something that everyone has, or could get, to make a shim for these locks. I have seen a quite a few videos were they don't even mention what they used, or the dimensions of the shim they made. Figured with using the actually smartkey that the locks comes with, should even up the odds for people like us to make something that works. Have a great weekend 🤜🤛

Back in my Lockpicking101 days I made a decoder for these locks. It was a proof of concept tool really. Meanwhile, another member was working on a small reader made from a skeletonized keyblank and otoscope. He got the tool produced. I used this sidebar tension technique on Master lock. LPL later found the same exploit. I would never have thought about using this same technique on these gen. 3 locks. Well done, sir.

Best explanation I've seen yet for Gen 3 vs others. I'm assuming this hack doesn't work for for Gen 1 or 2?
@RookKnight Жыл бұрын
Thanks you my friend 🙏 and you are correct, from my understanding with the gen 1 & 2 you can tension, and pick them like a regular lock. In truth, I think the gen 1 & 2 are more difficult to pick because of that. I don't believe gen 1 is even in production anymore (and are hard to find now days), and the gen 2 are all getting phased out for the gen 3. Have s great rest of your weekend brother 🤜🤛

Great video my friend. I have not had the opportunity to try a super bump key if the customer does not have the original key. I believe I could bump the lock open and then use the tool to rekey it to a new bitting. Have you done this yet? I am just starting a locksmith business and do not have a bunch of old locks and cylinders yet.
@RookKnight Жыл бұрын
Thanks for checking out the video. I honestly don't know if a bump key would work on these Gen 3s, but that's an interesting idea. Possibly if you shimmed the sidebar first? You definitely have me thinking. Thanks again for watching, and I wish you luck on your Locksmithing business👍🏻👍🏻
@jpadilla6436Ай бұрын
Isn't there a steel ball there? Everyone I've come across has a steel ball. I had usually destroyed them. Drilled for screws (some deadbolts use hardened steel) or used a rotary file and ground out the ball bearing and drilled the sidebar and also the 12 oclock where the combs rise out of the plug. Then torque over.
@RookKnightАй бұрын
If you watch the full video I gut the lock, and show the 2 steel balls on either side, but they're deeper in, and more likely for drill protection, and don't effect the shim's pathway. Hope that helps.
@jpadilla6436Ай бұрын
@RookKnight Thanks for the reply. These gen 3 locks in my opinion have the same security as medeco. Same security as in, to much to deal with so a thief looks for other means of entry. I deal with them all the time. Kinda same as gm sidebar.I work in property maint. The decoder is the best method right now in my opinion. Thank you and be safe.
@RookKnightАй бұрын
@jpadilla6436 I agree with you, a thief is not going to take the time to learn how to pick them. They would more likely just put a rock through a window. Decoder is definitely the way to go. Much more reliable. Picking with the shim is more of a fun project, and maybe good in a pinch. Have a good rest of your evening, stay safe too brother

This shim will only be effective for the gen 3. With the gen 1 & 2 you should be able to picked them with a regular tension tools and pick, but first you will have to find out what generation lock you have.
@RookKnight Жыл бұрын
Take a look at this, it should help you figure out what generation you have. In it the guy mentioned a gen 4 but I don't know if I agree with it, it's basically it's a 3 upgraded. @@TequilaDaveI couldn't say for sure, if I had to guess I would say it's possible a gen 2. This one I'm picking in the video is a 660 and only as of late, have they started putting the gen 3 inside them. Best advice is to gut it and compare with the photos in the link.
@TequilaDave Жыл бұрын
@RookKnight Being UK based and not that familiar with them I don't feel comfortable gutting one, even with a key. Anything like that or LFIC/SFIC locks I avoid taking apart. Maybe one weekend when I want to torment myself but until then I will leave it to the pros. 😀

Kwikset smart key locks have plastic in them. I notice that the Kwikset smart key lock in your video has plastic. I've seen and heard that Kwikset smart key locks can be forced open. I wouldn't recommend Kwikset smart key locks.
@RookKnight4 ай бұрын
Yeah they're not the greatest when force is involved, that being said many locks can't withstand something like a drill either. On the other hand they're fun to pick open. I enjoy it anyways. I hear what your saying though, and agree.
