Great video, I love the reset after harvest as well. Half way through the season I am usually telling my wife all of the plans and ideas we will put into place the next year. Thanks for sharing.

Enjoying watching your corn picking ! I’m from rural Tracy, Mn. ! We don’t have anyone around here that picks corn on the cob anymore !

Thanks Dennis! I've been past Tracy a time or two. There's gotta be someone around there still picking. We old-schoolers are a sneaky bunch, LOL.

Mike, I just wanted to let you know that I just found your channel last night and I watched many of your videos. I have to say that I have enjoyed them very much. Part of the reason is that our operations are a lot alike. I'm a retired teacher who has farmed all his life in addition to working. Now I can just farm, and I farm about the same amount as you - about 105 acres, growing corn, soybeans, oats and bale square bales of hay. I'm located in western PA, about 50 miles east of Pittsburgh. I use older equipment like you do. For example, 4 years ago, I bought a John Deere 4400 combine, which is a 1971, which is only about 3 years newer than your JD 55. Your combine is in such great condition for it's age. I farm with a small fleet of 4 Oliver tractors and a White MOdel 2-110, which is my tillage tractor. Anyway, I hope you will keep up with the videos.

Hey Charlie! It's comments like this that make me glad I started making videos, and inspire me to keep going. I'm glad you're enjoying them. Good on you for continuing the small farm tradition! I actually looked at a number of 4400 combines before we bought the 55. And of course, last year a great deal came along on a 6620 with all the right accessories, but I was already committed by then. Oh well, that probably would've been too much machine for us anyway. I have to say, I'm envious of your oat crop. I really wanted to get oats into our rotation this year to help diversify our crops and break the weed cycles. Dad wasn't in favor of it though, and we lack any kind of bins for small grain storage. Plus, we don't have a swather or a belt pickup for the combine (yet), so I would've been jumping the gun. Hopefully in the next couple of years I can follow through. Grandpa grew them, so why couldn't we? Right? I've never run any Oliver or White tractors, but we have a few neighbors with them, and they really seem to be solid machines. Plus, I just like the older stuff. It's simple and - mostly - reliable.

Oh man Randy, a lot of things have to go sideways to be picking corn in the spring. I can sympathize. In 2019 we battled the mud in the fall and got ours in at 25% moisture. A good amount of it spoiled in the cribs. My cousin decided to leave his and combined in the spring. He had it down to 16% out of the field, but I have not idea how much of it went down or ended up being deer feed. Those are the hard decisions that a guy has to live with. Thanks for sharing!

I just subscribed. I enjoyed your videos on picking corn. Yes, it was a terribly wet year here in Minnesota. Where are you located? I’m north of the Twin Cities about 45 miles.

You boys need to get some tire chains, makes a big difference. I just finished picking on December 19th with my John Deere 2040 mud chains and one row new idea. Had to wait forever for a good freeze.
@ravenviewfarm4 жыл бұрын
Wyatt Francis - Well, there’s an idea! We’ve got chains for the M, and even an old set for the 4020 laying around, but they were always used for winter work. Never considered trying them in the mud. Thanks for the tip!

Man isn't that the truth, 2019 was a tough year ! Glad you got the harvest in. Do you have a high capacity sheller or do you market the ear corn? Have a happy holiday's you and your family!
@ravenviewfarm4 жыл бұрын
We have a Minneapolis Moline 1200 sheller that we typically use in the spring to shell out the ear corn - which I'm sure will be the subject of some spring videos. Although given the low yield and discouraging market prices, I'll probably try to do some local, direct to consumer marketing of either ear corn or cleaned shelled corn. Whatever's left in the spring will go to Cargill or CHS. Happy Holidays to you too!

You know, I’ve mentioned that to him a few times, but he just really likes using the 686 for picking corn. It uses half the fuel, is more nimble, and has better sight lines to keep an eye on everything. The 4020 is also louder inside the cab from the engine, while simultaneously making it harder to hear the picker running. In past years, we’ve put the 4020 on the picker if the weather has been wet and the fields are muddy. The extra weight and locking differential help get around. It’s just not his favorite for that job though. 🤷♂️
