Picking & Packing Sweet Corn near Columbiana Ohio
Video from a farm near Columbiana Ohio as they are picking and packing sweet corn for market. In this video I start out in the field as they pick the sweet corn then go inside the barn where the corn is sorted, packed, chilled and put in the cooler before being sent to market.

I was the lead project manager on the development of this very unique harvesting concept. It was originally developed as a smaller two row machine by a grower in north Florida. He had too many problems keeping it running and eventually it ended up in the weeds. Our local dealer heard about it and we eventually had the machine shipped to WI where we further developed the concept and adapted it to our larger corn harvester chassis. We also created a one-row configuration for smaller fresh market operations. It has changed how fresh cob corn is harvested World-wide, providing for the first time a viable alternative to hand harvesting fresh market corn.

I would be curious to know what variety they raise. We only raise a little sweet corn on the farm but the varieties we raise seem to have multiple ears that are ready at different times. It would be nice to have a variety that only puts on one ear that is all ready at the same time. I’m sure these guys have it down to a science and have varieties that do just that.

Good video - really liked it. I was surprised at the low sides on the trailers and the quantity of them they had, I presume it is a fairly 'delicate crop' when freshly picked for resale to the public, as opposed to it being picked for animal feed or is that a different type altogether.
@meganmcmaster1331
@meganmcmaster1331 3 жыл бұрын
We try not to fill our wagons too full so we don't loose any coming from the field. But yes, sweet corn is for people to eat and what gets picked for animal feed is field corn which is harvested by a combine.

Getting it fresh! I live near there, and it's a lot of fields out that way. There is a field right near my house where they have grown corn or soybeans every year, I even filmed it being harvested last year. However, this year it has not been planted/prepared yet, it's just gettin covered in weeds. Is that normal for them to abandon/not plant a field?
@meganmcmaster1331

It may be a field that we no longer farm or it was too wet to plant at the time we tried to plant it.
@epiccsx
@epiccsx 3 жыл бұрын
@@meganmcmaster1331 Ok, that makes sense. This one is noticeable when it's wet, especially the southwest corner. It could be either one, as there is a part of grass (about as wide as a typical combine) they have left for a few years that splits part of the field for some reason, and the corn doesn't seem to grow much in the southwest corner.
@meganmcmaster1331

The head pulls the stalks in and removes the sweet corn from the stalk. Conveyers inside separate the corn and the stalk. The stalk stays in the field for compost ( goes back into the soil). We hand grade out within our building and the scraps or less than A grade corn also goes back out into the field as we grade it out. We do have some farmers that will come in and load there trucks up for hogs to get those scraps.
