One thing you could have pointed out is that if you retire at the end of the year, your lump-sum payout for annual leave will pay out in the next tax year. For some Feds, they may be staying in the same tax bracket, but for me, I dropped from the 22% to the 12% bracket and, because I didn’t have to pull anything out of my TSP that year, I stayed in the 12%. That means I saved 10% on the taxes on my lump sum payout by not taking it in a year with a lot of income!

I can't believe people are so concerned about having to wait a month or two to get paid? Are they making so much in retirement that it makes sense? First week of January is the most logical time every year end of leave year. Also an advantage to leaving in January that lump some is less taxed your income will be much lower. Great job giving actual dates by the way.

I never trusted them enough to retire in sometime in January. I retired the end of December to make sure I wouldn't lose my AL.

I’m thinking about retiring on my birthday, May 18. 😂 I like what you said at the end of the video. Focus on getting eligible for retirement and a bunch of money saved up first more so than a date. 13 years away 🤞

I am retiring at the middle of the last pay period of the year, so as to be able to max out my annual lump sum, and still collect payment for January. My maximum annual lump sum, and collecting retirement pay for January is more important to me than another 4 hours of sick leave (which I have an excess of) and those extra 8 hours of annual. Strategy is individual.

Be careful on what day you retire. I rember I missed a week of pay because I didn't time it right. It was ok because I had accumulated vacation on my last check. Good luck to all you guys retiring.

I'm in my 19th year and I'm only 45. When I retire I want to collect my full pension right away, so I'm probably going to stay till I hit at least 30yrs. In that case I will be 56yrs old when I retire. GOD Permitting.

D. Haws! Love your videos and great explanation of most all different scenarios. Great explanation of retiring at the end of the pay period, but you have a lot of USPS employees that listen and view you. Our pay periods end on Fridays and not Saturdays. Thanks!

Smart people retire with zero Annual Leave and Zero Sick Leave.. they use it all well still making 100 % of their salary .. plus you earn more leave.. while not working and your service time increases which means a higher retirement check !!! it's a win, win.
