Hey there friends! Just dropping in to chime in on whether the koi will be physically abused by the African Cichlids..Here in South Florida many people keep koi and African Cichlids together without any issues. Of course, the size of the pond is important. This pond is about 30,000 gallons and there is plenty of room for the fish, as well as massive amounts of water being filtered continuously. I’ve been watching the fish and the cichlids haven’t even noticed the koi. It’s been about a week since I got them. All good. Like I said in video the koi will stir up substrate and the cichlids are eating algae..so they are working in unison to maintain the ponds ecosystem:) the koi can potentially effect my water lilies so I’ll be keeping an eye on those! Down here in Fl we are lucky to be able to keep cichlids outside in ponds, if the koi and cichlids were in a fish tank, then it wouldn’t be a good idea to mix the two as it’s hard to have a large enough tank to accommodate both.

I would have thought those koi would get picked on. But I know Paul down at Angel’s Paradise is a master fish-keeper and would have told you if the koi wouldn’t be ok with the cichlids. He’s an expert. I’m not.

You should put some freshwater clams in the wetland zone or under the waterfall,they will help with greenish water(and they are good to the ecosistem in general) and they will be happy (only downside :if you can only find non native mussels you have to be extremely careful not to release the larvae in nature)

Agree a couple large primary non predatory giraffe catfish would look good. And to control the cichlid numbers a group of around ten cuckoo synodontis catfish. In that pond I'd even give a MBU puffer a go.
@newtonianlaw3249
@newtonianlaw3249 4 жыл бұрын
@@zebedeemadness2672 I would hesitate with the puffer, while I have not had that one, but I had others and they were SUPER bitey(I don't remember what type it was but it was really mean), and with the kiddos that seems like a bad idea to me... So are the MBU Puffers like that? And on another note, do fish behave differently in an aquarium compared to a pond?
@FreshwaterIchthyology
@FreshwaterIchthyology 4 жыл бұрын
@@newtonianlaw3249 I've seen MBU puffers bite the common bristlenose, Ancistrus cf. cirrhosus in half. The cichlids are also likely to stress out the puffer and it would prefer a planted but large aquarium maybe with fish too small to eat but realistically with mbu anything is at risk.

You need to get some tanganyikan sydontis catfish to help stir up the bottom and give a different look in the pond (they are very active and look like little sharks cruising the bottom). Also check out the various species of goby cichlids from lake tanganyika they are another great algae eating option that will not take up any open water space and look different from anything you have.

Not suitable with Rift Valley cichlids as they require soft acidic water not hard alkaline water. In addition to that the Loricariidae 'Plecos' will require a food of their own and any put in will get eaten by the cichlids/koi long before the plecos which are generally slow feeders get to it. Their also likely get nipped by the cichlids and require a hell of a lot of flow in the majority to really do well and be at their best.
