I have to disagree with you on the mention that birds are an alternative to cats or dogs if one has allergies, because people can have or acquire allergies to birds as well. I read years ago in Bird Talk where this couple had birds all their life and she all of a sudden developed life threating allergies to where they had to build a glass enclosure with separate ventilation in order to keep them. So anyone who is thinking about getting a bird for the first time, like you said, do your research, visit breeders and pet shops and get a hands on the birds before acquiring any. Then it would be great if you would then go to bird rescue places and find your forever bird there that is in need of a caring and loving person.

Windy Moore I couldn't agree more. Most people have no idea what they are getting into. Done right, you can have the greatest companion. Done wrong, most often the birds are kicked to the curb in a sense.

+Magnolia Leighe Yeah. I love birds and it drives me insane when I see people who clearly know nothing attempting to get one. My brother's roommate got a small budgie and realized he could take care of her. I would have been livid if I hadn't gotten a bird out of that mess. My brother was just like "hey, you want this bird."And she's the sweetest little girl. Though th eonly thing likes to go foraging underneath her cage. Which I don't let her do because I have dogs as well.

I had two parakeets when I was about 14. They were the most wonderful pets I'd had since my springer spaniel passed away. They're very affectionate if raised properly. After my parents said we had to give them away we got a love bird and he was so obnoxious. It really is important you pick a bird that fits you.

I really love green cheek conures, but I know conures are usually very loud, especially sun conures and jenday conures. Is the green cheek conure loud or quiet? I've heard that they're quiet enough to be in apartments from some people and I've heard that they are loud and noisy from others. So, what is the general noise level for them? Thanks.

Senegal was my first pet parrot, thats probably the best first step to getting into them. Their attitudes are like the cockatoo however not nearly as big or loud. Can speak a little but very good at imitating computer noises. You will answer your phone a couple times a night but realize it was just the bird screwing with you.

+Guppy2Shoes Yeah those beaks can seem intimidating. But I've had various animal companions throughtout my life and my favorite is definitely birds. I mean if I had my way my house would turn into a massive animal sancturary but my parents didn't so much fly for that idea. But I do have 6 sweet a imal companions. $ are birds. Two budgies and 2 cockatiels.

In my opinion, if you want a bird that's funny to watch, makes noise (But not too much noise) is cute, and has PLENTY of personality get a few owl finches!!!!!!!!!!!!!! *But know how to care properly for them. These birds are sooo cute and funny!!! My finches each have a special personality- Cheep is lazy and loves to fluff up and take naps, but Little noisemaker is always playing with him and hopping back and forth from the perch to wall wall to perch perch to wall, using Cheep as an obstacle to go over and around. Noisemaker also loves to sing when he's happy. Pirp is really grouchy, he sings to show off and likes to annoy and yell at me. They all make such cute mewing sounds and are very easy to keep!!!

cockatiels rage between their breeds, i have seen them range from as low as 100 to at most 200(depends on your location) caring for them is not too hard compared to larger birds, however if u have school your bird will get lonely, so in that case get 2, when i owned these birds they were noisy as hell, only because they wanted attention, imo these birds are louder alone than in pairs. so my only issue with them can be their noise lvl sometimes but they are good starter birds

Amazing video! I'm thinking of getting a bird (or even 2 so they can keep eachother company) in the future and I keep thinking of which one would be the best for me. I've had budgies in the past so I know in an about how you have to take care of them. For a while I was thinking of getting a cockatoo but found out they need a lot of time and attention, so now I'm more into getting 2 cockatiels. Is it ok to have 2 cockatiels if you're gone from home 9 hours a day (work)?

@0:58 I find it interesting that you called the Budgerigar (Budgie) a parakeet. Parakeet is only the species of parrot it is. What you must learn, is that there is more than just one kind of bird that is a parakeet, so it is essential to use it's proper name (Budgerigar / Budgie) when describing this species of parakeet. I see this error a lot, which is very common amongst videos uploaded from America and Canadia. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parakeet

CONSIDER RESCUE BIRDS! I got two budgies/parakeets about 6 months ago and have since come to believe that birds are not meant to be kept in captivity. Birds were made to fly, forage for food, socialize with other birds and make baby birds. In my small condo, I try to provide my birds with opportunities to forage and fly and I try to spend quality time with them daily but **I would urge you not to buy a bird and continue the breeding of caged birds**- but to consider a rescue bird from a local shelter or rescuer. Also, please read about birds as they are a lot of work to entertain (keep happy), clean up after and keep healthy. They are a serious time commitment and do best with people who are home most of the day every day. I love my birds and am committed to caring for them but seriously didn't know what I was getting myself into.

just go slow. Shiloh was a brat when I got him he bit me and ran from me constantly. one thing I have learned is not all birds have the same personality. you might want to stop trying to pet yours until it is more comfortable with you. I have had Shiloh over a year and can now pet him. when you get yours used to you and u try to pet it, it could start trying to nip at you to bluff you off. just keep trying to touch it and if it does bite you blow softly into its face. just talk to your bird when you have free time and when you go to get it out of the cage give it a treat that it will only get if it comes out to you. that worked with Shiloh. I know it can be discouraging but its worth it when they love you. good luck hope this helps!

You should consider getting two: parrots can rely more on you to provide the interaction but canaries are not as intelligent so they would probably thrive better with another bird of their species.

It's a good video, but the most important thing for birds wasn't metioned: A partner of the same species, but different sex. Nothing can ever replace a "real" partner. A single kept bird can never be as happy as a pair of them, interacting with eachother and the owner. Everyone, who saw how wondeful they are together, can ever support single keeping. Parrots are like shoes, you need either two of them or none! ;)

My Red winged Parrot-let is 3 years old, she just laid 3 (non fertile) eggs. A week after we discarded the eggs she started acting different. I looked up what could be the problem, she has the signs of an egg binding. But I can't feel an egg at all. I tried a warm bath, warm cloths, and massaging her. How do I know she has an egg stuck, before having to go to a vet? I really don't know how much an avain vet will coast. Please Help!!!!

Kacey, we can't answer medical questions online -- and we don't have an avian vet on staff who would be able to provide his or her expertise. You really need to contact your vet about this problem before it becomes more serious.
